Diaspora and Presidential Elections: 53 Macedonians Registered to Vote So Far

      February 18, 2014

Fifty-three Macedonians from the diaspora have thus far registered to vote at the forthcoming presidential elections in Macedonia.

According to the Rulebook issued by the State Election Commission (SEC), the registration deadline is between February 1 and March 7, 2014.

Most voters have registered in the electoral constituency Europe and Africa (39 persons). The interest is low in the eight and tenth election districts - North and South America - where only eight electors requested to vote, whereas in Australia and Asia, only 6 persons have taken interest in casting their ballots.

Previously, the SEC publicized that 68,000 Macedonians living abroad have the right to vote, who can give their votes in the Macedonian presidential election for the first time. To be able to vote, they need to submit papers on residence and a signed statement. The Foreign Ministry is tasked to deliver the requests to the SEC no later than March 10.

The two biggest political parties in Macedonia, VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM, have started to mobilize the diaspora. Pavle Sazdov, Macedonian member of parliament from America, has been visiting this election unit from January 30 - March 3, holding panels with emigrants and discussing the political situation in Macedonia and the upcoming election. He is holding meetings in the churches in New York, Detroit and New Jersey.

According to Macedonians living in Australia, Milorad Dodovski, MP from this electoral constituency, has said the problem with the distance from consulates will be solved and more polling stations will be opened.

"We are visiting homes of Macedonians, to scan if people are interested in voting. They can only cast ballots in Bern. We are under the impression that all Macedonians would like to vote, but I am not sure about Albanians from Macedonia. We go from house to house, to help people register and be able to vote," says Zivko Atanasov, President of the Community of Macedonian Associations in Switzerland.

Atanasov is a member of one of the VMRO-DPMNE’s committees in Switzerland. He has heard that SDSM members have also held meetings with emigrants to Switzerland.

In Europe, voting will take place in the consular offices in Tirana, Vienna, Brussels, Sarajevo, Sofia, Zagreb, Copenhagen, Talin, Paris, Strasbourg, Berlin, Bon, Munich, Athens, Thessaloniki, Budapest, Rome, Venice, Tel Aviv, Vatican, Hague, Warsaw, Bucharest, Moscow, Belgrade, Ljubljana, Madrid, Stockholm, Bern, Ankara, Istanbul, London, Podgorica, Prague, Pristina and Oslo.

In the US electoral unit, voting will take place in six cities: Ottawa, Toronto, Washington, Chicago, Detroit and New York.

The diaspora from the electoral constituency Asia and Africa, can cast ballots in Cairo, Canberra, Melbourne, Beijing, New Delhi and Doha.

Macedonians living abroad will vote on April 12, one day before the first presidential round in Macedonia.

The diaspora was entitled to vote for the first time in the 2011 parliamentary elections. According to SEC data, there were 4,591 voters in Europe, half of whom voted (2,494). In America, out of the 1,824 registered voters, 994 persons voted (or 54.5%). In Australia, 600 out of the 794 voters cast ballots, representing the highest turnout in all three electoral constituencies outside Macedonia (75.19%).

                        Lavce Pelagonski,

Can you give us a clue on the final candidates? Wikipedia is not updated. Are the following four, or three of them? Or any new one?

-Gjorge Ivanov (Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity)
-Stevo Pendarovski (Social Democratic Union of Macedonia)
-Ilijaz Halimi (Democratic Party of Albanians)
-Zoran T. Popovski- Citizen option for Macedonia (GROM)

Since the three of them (actually their parties) are known can you tell us something about what Popovki or GROM is?

Popovski was apart of SDS and he moved to GROM which is a party that was formed from SDS. Simply out they are Communists.
