MoEP Peterle Criticises Lack of Progress in Name Issue

n the past few days, Slovenian officials from Brussels have levelled a series of criticisms against Macedonia. Former Slovenian PM, current MoEP, Alojz Peterle assessed for Kanal 5 TV that in the months following his visit to Macedonia he has not registered any progress in the name issue. “We made efforts to assist Macedonia, but we cannot do anything anymore,” stated Peterle. In his view, the Greek and Macedonian leaders who can resolve the issue are responsible for the current situation, and not the European countries, which must observe the rule of solidarity. “We hope that the persons who have the greatest responsibility will reach an acceptable proposal in order that Macedonia overcome that issue. The majority of the EU is not in favour of this situation. Macedonia has numerous allies, but no one from the EU would go against the rules if Greece is reserved,” emphasised Peterle.

Slovenec Zrinski, I have a question for you. On June 6, you guys will have a referendum about the border dispute with Croatia and whether to block them if no agreement is reached. What's the latest in Slovenia and how do you think Slovenians will vote? Thanks

Personally I hope you guys veto Croatia so the EU wakes up and decides to abolish the consensus rule which is a joke. I don't think Slovenia would have ever thought of vetoing Croatia if it wasn't for Greece setting a bad precedent by blocking Macedonia.

You are spot on here about the use of veto. Greece has set a dangerous precedent with it's use for political gain and it is now possible thet other countries will use the veto process for their own negotiating tactics! The solution in my opinion is throw the Greeks out of the EU and get the EU back on track as a union of like minded nations willing to uphold the laws and equal rights for all member nations and no more jumping through hoops to appease racists!

Makalek, Keep in mind that Italy Vetoed Slovenia back in 1996 over Trst.

BTW, Zrinski lives in Sweden and he is half Slovenian from his fathers side, so dont put all the blame on him.
