Slovenia is currently being led by a conservative government. Along with Hungary's Orban, the Visegrad group and the Craiova group, they are pushing for the integration of the western Balkans into the EU. The socially conservative values they claim to possess may be appealing to many Macedonians, but some of these politicians are more interested in increasing their voting bloc in the EU than preserving the dignity of the countries they're enticing to join. For some, the overall cause of maintaining at least a level of conservativism in social issues isn't bigger than their individual bitchery and denigration against others. Let's also not forget about how Slovenia has treated Macedonia in recent years. Recently, the Slovenian ambassador to Bulgaria, Anžej Frangeš, had this to say.

(Translation) The Slovenian Ambassador to Bulgaria, Andrzej Franges, estimates that it would be a strategic mistake to leave the Balkans out of the European integration process. In an interview with BNR, Frangesch said that this was a continuation of the policy pursued by Sofia during her presidency of the Council of the EU. According to him, the two countries have different views on EU enlargement - how and when it should be implemented, but he considers it very important to support this process, saying that the process has brought change in the candidate countries. The Slovenian ambassador also commented on Bulgaria's position regarding Macedonia and its European perspective: "Bulgaria is one of the EU members and our partner, we must understand Bulgaria's position, but on the other hand we must move it forward the integration process in the Western Balkans. The EU has responsibilities in this regard… What we can do is try to support the dialogue and see how the two countries can go together in the same direction and where things need to be resolved in a European context. "There are things that are on a bilateral level between Sofia and Skopje, as well as things that need to be decided at the level of the European Union." Franges acknowledged that there are similarities between the territorial dispute between Slovenia and Croatia during Zagreb's EU membership talks and the Bulgarian-Macedonian problems, but they are smaller than the differences. Slovenia, as the ambassador reminded, vetoed Croatia not at the beginning, but at the end of the whole negotiation process. He did not comment on whether Ljubljana was preparing a compromise proposal in the dispute between Bulgaria and Macedonia.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union told Macedonia on Friday it must resolve a row with EU member Greece over its name to get a date to start membership talks, but did not rule out new steps this year towards entry. “Maintaining good neighbourly relations, including a negotiated and mutually acceptable solution on the name issue, remains essential,” said a draft final statement from a meeting of EU leaders. The draft, obtained by Reuters, said further steps “are possible by the end of this year” if all conditions are met. Macedonia, which split from Yugoslavia in 1991, has the same name as Greece’s most northerly province. Athens says Skopje must use a compound name such as “New” or “Upper” Macedonia and already blocked Macedonia’s bid at a NATO summit in April to be invited to join the defence alliance. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said late on Thursday resolving the name dispute was also key to advancing ties with the EU. “What I can say for certain is that Macedonia will be given a date to resume negotiations as soon as all conditions are fulfilled,” he said after the first day of talks. “There are some conditions that need to be met which are not completely in the remit of the EU institutions,” he said, citing “the issue of the name.” Gunfights and fraud during Macedonia’s June 1 elections did not help Skopje’s case. In the summit draft, the EU called on Macedonia to ensure that elections due next year would be free and fair, and to crack down on corruption and organised crime. In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.

Here's some more from "our friend" Janez Jansa, the PM of Slovenia.

(Translation) 3 July 21 - Slovenia certainly understands Bulgaria's position on its veto on starting negotiations with Macedonia, as it is a member state. This was stated by Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa in response to a question from BNR. "When we are in one family, his interest comes first, and then the others," he said. Prime Minister Jansa added that at the same time the EU must behave like a family, or else it is under threat. "We must try to find a compromise," he said. The Prime Minister described the latest proposal of the Portuguese presidency to continue the negotiations as good. "It is good for Bulgaria to accept a nation that speaks a similar language and has a similar culture. "It may be a point of contention, but we need to have a strategic view of things." For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, Anže Logar, stated that one of his first upcoming visits will be to Bulgaria in connection with the country's veto on the start of negotiations with Macedonia. On Thursday, Slovenia took over the six-month rotating EU presidency from Portugal. In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.
