The speech by Mike Rann is condemned in the Australian media, which writes that the speech was made at a Greek festival mite turn into a serious diplomatic incident. The speech by Premier Rann was made in November last year, however the video footage has only become wide spread the last few days. His speech is received as a grave error particularly due to the fact that only 3000 Macedonians live in South Australia and 84,000 nationwide.

        Hello

        Here is this one:

I have just dragged my sorry arse into work. Will try and do as many as I can. Very early in the morning here

The Macedonian embassy in Canberra will send a protest note to the government of South Australia regarding the published video of Mike Rann in which he accuses Macedonia of stealing Greek history. The members of the Macedonian community with strong reactions also against the accusations that were made towards our president Ivanov in which according to Rann he is prasing Macedonain culture different to the Greek one which has brought dangerous incidents.
-Again we have the leader Ivanov who is causing problems in the most dangerous way. He changed the name of the airport and the highway to Aleksandar the Great. In the Slav’s parts there are again mixed problems like there were in the 90’s because of political reasons- sasy Rann.
After this diplomatic incident caused by Rann members of the UMD with base in Washington meet with the Australian culture minister and a strong protest note has been send to Rann who said the Macedonians in Australia and the president Ivanov don’t have the right to steal the Greek history and culture. In his speech, mister Rann promises the Greek community in Australia that he is strongly backing the Greek cause. In the Australian media Mr Rann promises he will not stop talking about things he strongly believes in. After this diplomatic scandal, Australian media accuses Rann of being involved in a sex- scandal with a waitress in the Australian Parliament.

Here is the second one: http://www.time.mk/read/49882f24ef/e...tin-title.html

The Macedonian vote in UN regarding Australia will depend on how the Australian government handles the official protest send to the government after the pro-Greek statements made by Mike Rann in the Australian.
The Macedonain embassy in Canberra today send protests note after Mr Rann’s speech, in which he accused Macedonia of stealing Greek history and the president Ivanov of making the problems worse with the our Southern Neighbor.
The Macedonian ambassador Pero Stojanovski asked for a public apology and explanation from the Australian Government.
His answer to the question on how will Macedonia vote in the UN, he said: The Answer to this question depends on the answer and reaction of the Australian government- writes the Australian.
Mr Rann yesterday confirmed he stand by his statement and has no intention of apologizing.

Will try and do some more later.

The Macedonian support of Australia to join the UN will depend very much on how the Australian government reacts and handles the statement made by the South Australian PM, Mr Rann.
When asked will the statement made by Mr Rann have any effect on the Macedonian vote for Australia to join the UN, the Macedonian ambassador replayed that that very much depends on the reaction of the Australian government after the statement made by Mr Rann.
The Macedonian embassy in Canberra yesterday send a protest note after Mr Rann’s statement in which he accuses Macedonia of stealing Greek history and culture. The Macedonian ambassador Pero Stojanovski and consulate Zoran Kocevski showed strong reaction yesterday in the Australian parliament. They have met with Luke Simpkins , MP in the Australian parliament, after which he has brought the protest note to the Australian Parliament.
Getting involved in the Macedonian question just to claim more votes on the next elections and causing tension between communities is highly irresponsible causing the hurting everyone’s feelings and causing racial tension.
According to Mr Simpkins there may be legal action against Mr Rann. He adds that this question is very complicated and it cannot be resolved with one statement and it should be left to the governments of Skopje and Athens to resolve it. Mr Simpkins accused Mr Rann of irresponsible behavior with which he has hurt the feelings of the Macedonian community in Australia, only to gain more votes from the Greek Australian Diaspora in the next elections.

                          Mike Rann article from greece

«Macedonia is as Greek as the Acropolis» South Australia Premier Rann says
                          Adelaide, 10.02.2010
“I will speak of Macedonia being Hellenic and nobody will silence me, because it is something I believe in”. This was the answer of the PM of South Australia Mike Rann, to the reactions of citizens coming from FYROM.

Mr. Rann has been supporting in every possible way the Greek side on Macedonia and Cyprus, outraging the citizens of Australia who come from Turkey and FYROM.

The newspaper of Adelaide “The Advertiser” published an article whereby reference is made to Mr. Rann’s speech during the Dimitria Greek festival in the western suburbs in November in which he stated that FYROM’s president Giorgi Ivanov is“stirring up trouble in the most dangerous way” and affirms his commitment to Adelaide’s Greek voters and promises his Government will “remain firm and unswerving in our support for your cause”.
“It is important because no one is entitled to steal another nation’s history or culture,” Mr Rann said.

Mr Koloski, president of the self proclaimed “United Macedonian Diaspora”, told The Advertiser that his people had been “slandered” and demanded an unconditional apology. He also met the Minister of Multicultural Affairs, Michael Atkinson in Adelaide and issued a letter of protest to Mr. Rann.

Mr. Rann stated in the past that “Macedonia is as Greek as the Acropolis”

                            Oldy but a goody

South Australian Premier, Mike Rann, has become entangled in a controversy about funding of a Greek Orthodox Church in his electorate.

                            Alexandros Logothetis
The Greek Orthodox church of St. Dimitrios in Salisbury, Adelaide has been caught in the middle of an exchange of political fire.
South Australia’s State Opposition Shadow Minister of Finance Rob Lucas has highlighted the large grant that the parish of St. Demetrios received in 2006 from the Special Premier’s Fund.
Mr Lucas has seized the opportunity to accuse SA Premier Mike Rann of a conflict of interest in the matter since the parish is located in his electorate, the area of Ramsay.
The issue of the $473,000 grant to St. Dimitrios was first reported in 2007, after evidence given to the Legislative Council Budget and Finance Committee confirmed the existence of the Premier’s Special Appeal Fund that was controlled by Mr Rann.

Usually the fund would allocate small grants between $3,000 to $5,000 to community organisations. Although an amount ceiling was never established, the grant to St. Dimitrios is by far the largest ever allocated through this fund. The amount was used for the building of a new Cultural and Learning Centre.
The recent reappearance of the issue in the local media is the aftermath of revelations made in the Parliament about grants approvals to sporting clubs and the consequent prompt by Mr Lucas of the St. Dimitrios grant.

It should be noted that in a press release from 2007 Mr Lucas questioned the use of the funds.

“Whilst the Government claims this funding was used for a ‘Cultural and Learning Centre’, I have been informed that a significant portion of the grant was actually spent on providing an enormous roof to accommodate an outdoor area,” Mr Lucas said in his press release.

Speaking to Neos Kosmos English Edition (NKEE), Mr Lucas stood by his statement but stopped short of calling it a misappropriation of funds.

The priest of the St. Dimitrios Parish, however, Rev. Christos Tsoraklidis disputed Mr Lucas’s claims and argued that the outdoor roof project was not covered by the Premier’s Fund grant. “We have submitted audited accounts to the last cent regarding our projects,” Rev. Tsoraklidis said.

“Mr Lucas is mistaken because the roof was built at a cost of approximately $80,000 that didn’t come from the grant but from our own fundraising efforts,” he added.

Reverend Tsorkalidis stressed the fact that Mr Lucas had never visited his parish nor had he attempted to inspect what was built with the grant. “I don’t understand what Mr Lucas’ problem is,” Rev Tsoraklidis wondered.

When asked by NKEE, Mr Lucas clarified that his issue is not with St. Dimitrios but that Mr Rann had a conflict of interest he had to address.

In a recent press release Mr Rann had stated that advice he’s received from the Deputy Crown Solicitor indicates that the simple fact that an organisation was located in his electorate does not raise the potential for a conflict interest.

Mr Lucas confirmed that for the time being he is not pursuing a wider investigation into the matter.

“Our criticism and concern is directed at the processes the Premier has used in terms of the granting of the money. We’re not directing criticism at the church or the individuals involved in the church,” Mr Lucas said.
