    Dear members of MTO,

For the sake of clarity, the action in the news report posted by Prolet, involves a public campaign among democratically minded Macedonians and Greeks in Greece to put pressure on the Greek government to rescind the discriminatory against Macedonians, 1982 laws.

It is quite separate from the legal action that has been initiated by the AMHRC, MHRMI and the Detsa begaltsi steering committee in Skopje - though it is never-the-less a positive initiative.

If others are now intending to launch a separate legal action, that is their business; though they should start their own separate thread about it on this forum in order to avoid confusion.

Lastly, we would like to assure everyone that lawyers who know their job, were contracted in Greece to manage this action, months ago.

    Regards,

    AMHRC.

Mr. Balkan - Melbourne Performance Saturday July 24th

AMHRC Recommends attending the Melbourne Staging of Mr. Balkan - Saturday July 24 Yan Yean Theatre‏

The award winning Australian Macedonian Theatre of Sydney visits Melbourne with its latest production.

Mr Balkan, a tragi-comedy traces the emotional trauma and tragedy of the Macedonian Nation. It sheds light on a little known period of Macedonian and European history where Macedonian children were removed from their native homes during the Greek Civil war and re-settled in Eastern European countries. Most were not allowed to return to their homes because of their Macedonian ethnicity. Some who agreed to adopt Greek names were allowed to return and those who refused resettled in the Republic of Macedonia, Australia, USA and Canada or stayed in their adoptive Eastern European countries.

At times hilarious, sad, joyous and bittersweet, "Mr. Balkan" is a celebration of the spirit of family, culture and a yearning to return to one's homeland. At its heart, this play shows how identity is both political and personal: while Mr Balkan´s separation from his homeland continues to torment him in his adult life, in seeking solace in his identity and in the memories of a stolen childhood, he has the will to go on.

Wow it sounds like a great play, and a good price for a ticket.

Is there going to be any other sessions? The website doesn't give any details on further performances.

            Makedonche,

To be honest, we don't know. We suppose if the play does well in terms of attendance, then the season will be extended - though we are not sure.

            Cheers,

            AMHRC.

Thanks boys, I'll keep an eye out for more sessions, or try and get them to S.A. if possible.

By all accounts it is an excellent artistic achievement and the performance last Saturday night in Melbourne, gave it full justice.

It covers alot of things, but basically its about the begalci told from the point of view of one Macedonia immigrant in a nursing home. There are 'flashbacks' to his past which show how he was dispossessed and uprooted, separated from the ones he loved and how all he has are his memories. There are some genuinely really hilarious moments. I wasn't expecting much, but then I had never gone to see a Macedonian play before. There were many people in tears, because the memories are still so raw for so many. I loved it. If you go to see it, I hope you enjoy it.

That is the best news to be heard in a decade,it's long overdue.I wonder how much is involved in terms of property or damage done. For one thing i wonder if they can ask to be referred as macedonians.I'm really glad to hear that's made my day.
