One of the main reasons for this is because the Gora region technically lies outside of the geographic region of Macedonia. Traditionally Sar Planina has been the border of NW Macedonia (it forms the border between Macedonia and Kosovo even today), Gora lies on the other side of Sar Planina. Have a look at this topographic map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ma...topography.svg

As SoM said there are some depictions of Macedonia which included regions of Thrace, etc. some old maps even show Kustendil as part of Macedonia. The traditional maps of Obedineta Makedonija don't usually show Gora as part of Macedonia. The region roughly corresponding to the Pieria prefecture in Greece is also a similar case, Older maps such as Dimitrija Cupovski's 1913 "Karta Makedonija" http://mk.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...20070913102459 dont show it as being part of Macedonia. New maps do however show the region around Katerini as being apart of Macedonia. If you have a look at the topographic map it may have been excluded due to the mountain range surrounding it, however I am not 100% sure about this, maybe someone else knows the real reason.

Yes it is our national sport but actually oil-wrestling is a tradition among all Turks in the world for at least 800 years. Maybe even more because there are Roman historical archives which says the Huns was doing oil-wrestling at 5th century.

The region of Gora was ceded/taken by Serbia from the Macedonian Republic in 1967 or thereabouts.

Pelister, have you got a reference or source that cites this event? Is it related to the area where Prohor Pcinski is located?

I don't have it anymore. Before I came to my senses about UMD I put together a basic report for them on the Gorani. The information came from an UNPROFOR website and its cited in that report. The thing is I have lost my copy. I am certain that it was either 57' or 67' or thereabouts. I've been so flat out lately, but I will have a look around for it. Where is Prohor Pcinski? The region taken was strictly the Gora region. If you find Restelica on a map, it is basically the region around that.

Its not just Skopje alot of people use the word Zejtin, Maslo is used aswell as Ulje but when you say Ulje its more like the use of Motor Oil.

Speaking of which Bill, Whats your opinion on Oil Wrestling (Pelivani)???

i guess "zejtin" is a Turkish borrowed word as you stated that Turks use the same word. I have always known and used "Maslo" which then we get mrsno to describe something oily or slipery.

Oil wrestling? only when females are involved. But seriously, i never knew it was a sport in Macedonia.

I have never heard of Zejtin in my life until this thread, the only word I know for oil, be it for cooking purposes, vehicles, or anything else, is 'maslo', which is related to the word 'maslinka' (olive).

SoM, we say "maslo" for oil too, derived from "maslinki" our traditional olive oil

Zejtin is used mostly in whole Eastern Macedonia. Guess it is a Turkish word, but hey, Eastern Macedonia was full of Turkish villages, no wonder.
