Mihajlov was an opportunist, his rise to the top spot of VMRO requires extensive research to be done as a 26 year old he stepped right into the central committee of VMRO upon Todor's death.
He used his position to murder in cold blood countless of Macedonian patriots both from VMRO and external to VMRO without the necessary vote as required in VMRO's constitution.
The way i see Mihajlov's era in VMRO is that he was primarily the one who brought the downfall of the organisation and the org lost it's way (Ended up killing our own people instead of focusing on the occupied areas).
In the end he escaped while his followers were being killed and arrested. Retired eventually in Rome whilst being funded by the MPO.
There is more to it but above is the summarised version.
Why did he kill so many fellow Macedonians?
I know of two tragic histories in the world- that of Ireland, and that of Macedonia. Both of them have been deprived and tormented.
Because he saw them as a threat to his leadership.
Macedonian vojvodi such as Ivan Brlo and Pancho Mihajlov who many viewed as the rightful replacement for Todor Aleksandrov.
He used the death of Aleksandrov to assassinate Macedonian revolutionaries and intellectuals.
It's sad that so many had to die so Mihajlov could secure his hunger for power, he was a manipulator that's for sure.
Do you believe he was a genuine Macedonian who just become too involved in fratricide and opportunism or was an actual agent of Sofia who strongly adhered to the Bulgarian nationalist doctrine.

Very hard to determine if he was ever a genuine Macedonian, however when VMRO was banned by the Bulgarian Government in 1934. You have to think, an extremely armed Organization highly organised was easily squashed. That just shows how close Mihajlov's VMRO was with the Bulgarian government.
Plus there many sources that talk of Mihajlov being close to the Bulgarian minister V'lkov, this is also evident when Protogerov tried to obtain fake passports when he sensed his life in danger from Mihajlov and co. These types of meetings were all done via the Bulgarian government and eventually soon after he was killed also.
Many Macedonians were killed due to Mihajlov being an instrument to the Bulgarian political circles, one clear example is Boris Izvorski and his cheta. They were on their way to cross to Greek Occupied Macedonia where the Bulgarian border patrol were given their whereabouts by Mihajlov most likely and liquidated.
Would love to know what Mihajlov actually did for Macedonia that some Macedonians believe he was a hero.
He actually orchestrated the killings of many Macedonians as opposed to enemies of Macedonia.
In my opinion, he was a primary factor why VMRO actually met it's demise and so many Macedonians lost their lives, while he ended up enjoying his life in Western Europe never to work again.

Izvorski after the assassination of Aleksander Protogerov in 1928 was on the side of the Protogerovisti. He heads the Sector of the Protoferov Wing in the Petrich District. His detachment was handed over to a military unit at the border with Greek Occupied Macedonia who then in turn but was handed over to the Mihajlovist Stojan Vardarski near the Razlog village of Dobrinishta where Boris Izvorski, Vasil Zarev, Boris Kozov, Georgi Nakov, Pando Kitsov, Spas Stoyanov, Georgi Hristov, Spas Vergov and Hristo Andonov are all killed

I read a little into Mihajlov and it doesn't seem he ever wanted to attach Macedonia to Bulgaria, he wanted it to be its own state but yeah is often accused of being an agent of Sofia.

He appears to want a seperate "Bulgarian" state a bit like Kosovo being a second Albanian state, however new CIA docs have painted him another light also so he too appears controversial at best with regards to his standpoints throughout his life.
But yeah, i can agree he wanted an independent Macedonian state, but whether this is to appease the Western Powers is unknown of he genuinely wanted independence.

The more i read on Mihajlov, the more i believe that his platform of an “Independent Macedonia” and “Macedonia for the Macedonians” was just smoke and mirrors.
Here is what Andres Londres wrote about Mihajlov and his methods on the good people of Pirin Macedonia.
"How does IMRO feed its servants? This is how! The owners of the cafes, restaurants and hotels; the grocers, bakers, sausage makers and stall holders of the district occupied by the conspirators – all of them taxpayers of the official Bulgarian Government – could not open their shutters or pitch their stalls unless they paid, in addition, a tithe to Mihailoff.
At Vantche’s [Mihajlov] orders the hotel-keepers must reserve five rooms in their hotels; two on the first floor for voivods, three higher up for the rank and file. To every man who presents himself with a card bearing Mihailoff’s seal, every baker, every butcher, every dairyman, tailor, hatter, shoemaker and chemist must supply bread, meat, cheese, clothes and medicines. Any who refuse will, for the first offence, have their shops closed for a month. If they refuse a second time, their shops will be rifled; a third time, they will be set on fire; a fourth, and the offender will be seized and taken before the tribunal of IMRO." - Londres, Terror in the Balkans p. 62

Have to question why he wanted a second Bulgaria and not just incorporate Macedonia into Bulgaria proper. The purpose of most Bulgarian nationalists is the establishment of a San Stefano Bulgaria. Why would Mihajlov seperate Macedonia from Bulgaria like that? He's a really confusing figure.

There are many arguments for that, one being the West would be more inclined for an independent Macedonia as opposed to annexation to Bulgaria.
Bulgaria advocated for an independent Macedonia when they were weak and Annexation of Macedonia when they were strong.
End of the day, Mihajlov flip flopped, he was more of an opportunist and i guess would tell whoever he spoke to what they wanted to hear which is the usual game of politics.

Vida Boeva was Vancho Mihajlov's secretary, her brother Boris Boev was minister for Sport in Ljubco Georgievski's government 1998 - 2002.
I believe she even lives now in the house Mihajlov lived in Rome funded by the MPO.
She has a dosier titled "Lihnida" in the archives where contact was made with her and the Yugoslav authorities back in the day.
She is a Mihajlov fanatic and in her eyes never did anything wrong even though he passed death sentences without bringing it to the CC of VMRO to vote on.
