Computers to translate world's 'lost' languages

    Wednesday, 21 July 2010
Scientists have used a computer program to decipher a written language that is more than three thousand years old.
The program automatically translated the ancient written language of Ugaritic within just a few hours.

Scientists hope the breakthrough could help them decipher the few ancient languages that they have been unable to translate so far.

Ugaritic was last used around 1200 B.C. in western Syria and consists of dots on clay tablets. It was first discovered in 1920 but was not deciphered until 1932.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology told the program that the language was related to another known language, in this case Hebrew.

The system is then able to make assumptions about the way different words are formed and whether they consist of a prefix and a suffix, for example.

Through repeated analysis, the program linked letters and words to map nearly all Ugaritic symbols to their Hebrew equivalents in a matter of hours.

The system looks for commonly used symbols in the two languages and gradually refines its mapping of the alphabet until it can go no further.

The Ugaritic alphabet has 30 letters, and the system correctly mapped 29 of them to their Hebrew counterparts.

Of the words that the two languages shared the program was able to correctly identify 60 per cent of them.

Science professor Regina Barzilay, who was leading the research, said: ‘Traditionally, decipherment has been viewed as a sort of scholarly detective game, and computers weren't thought to be of much use.

‘Our aim is to bring to bear the full power of modern machine learning and statistics to this problem.’
Other researchers have expressed scepticism about the program and say that it is of little use because many of the undeciphered texts have no known ancestor to map against.

The program also assumes that the computer knows where one word begins and another ends, something which is not always the case

But Professor Barzilay thinks the system can overcome this hurdle by scanning multiple languages at once and taking contextual information into account

She said: ‘Each language has its own challenges. Most likely, a successful decipherment would require one to adjust the method for the peculiarities of a language.’

But she points out the decipherment of Ugaritic took years and relied on some happy coincidences — such as the discovery of an axe that had the word “axe” written on it in Ugaritic.

‘The output of our system would have made the process orders of magnitude shorter,’ she says.
The system could also improve the reliability of translation software like Google Translate, the researchers believe.

        The true face of Shakespeare

        The true face of Shakespeare

Using 3D technology , scientists managed to reconstruct the face of one of the most important writers of all time , William Shakespeare. As I say , this is the first photograph showing really looked
        Shakespeare.
The new 3D photography radically different from previous exhibitions of the English writer and more about how emerged as scientists discovered the appearance of Shakespeare you can learn in the documentary " dead masks , which on 13 September will be broadcast on History Channel .

        - The results of research forenzichkoto amazing . They show how Shakespeare really looked , said the director of documentary Stuart Clark .

Clark 's team also made 3D models of Napoleon, Caesar , George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Reinkarnacijata his appearance is made by scanning mrtovechkata mask, or masks that are made throughout his life.

Producers of the program argue that the documentary will cause great interest , given that viewers can understand how some of the most look like figures from history.

The director also claims that the 3D model of Napoleon significantly different from the current view of the French general , while George Washington does not look nearly as submitted to the dollar.

However , experts believe the biggest controversies will cause the model of William Shakespeare. Many believe that the mask was found in Germany in 1840 does not belong to the English writer.

analysis after numerous experts make sure the mask still belongs to Shakespeare and say that based on the mask understand that the world most famous playwright before the end of life suffered from cancer.

Better buy some sunscreen for a cool tan or will the sun oops too much.

                2013 th of fatal World!

Огромна експлозија на енергија од Сонцето

Huge explosion of energy from the sun can paralyze the country within the three years, warn scientists.

They are afraid that a massive solar explosion likely occurred in 2013 and will cause global chaos.

Disaster that happens once every hundred years can cause destruction of communication systems forced landing of aircraft, crash of the Internet and lack of food, so everything from refrigerator to a satellite dish will be paralyzed.

Fear of the alleged blast is so large that the British Defence Secretary Liam Fox yesterday in London organized emergency conference.

Dr. Fox asked the scientists to make a strategy that would help Britain to deal with possible damage.

In 2013 the Sun will pass through the critical phase Loop, which is likely to manifest with a series of storms that radiation will cause large currents of energy.

I don’t know I would call it the best thing since sliced bread but if you like a good chewing gum occasionally this new gum will certainly appeal to you.

British scientists invent Rev7 - the new non-stick chewing gum!

London, 5 October 2010 (MIA) - It caught on in a flash – it calmed tense football managers and helped teenagers mask the smell of their first cigarettes.

London, 5 October 2010 (MIA) - It caught on in a flash – it calmed tense football managers and helped teenagers mask the smell of their first cigarettes.

Sadly, it also caught on people’s shoes, hair and on train seats, leading to endless hours of scrubbing and scraping.

But now chewing gum has survived this sticky patch.

British scientists have designed Rev7, the first non-stick gum, which apparently dissolves within a day and can be removed from clothing with just a bit of soap and water.

The gum apparently keeps its trademark taste and texture.

‘The motivation to invent the product came from seeing chewing gum on the streets in this country and in America. It’s everywhere,’ said Prof Terry Cosgrove at Bristol University.

But it took three years and a £10million grant to find the answer. The secret lies in the creation of a new polymer that can, er, also be used in paint. It replaces the latex, which is adhesive and resistant to the elements, in normal chewing gum.

That happened three years ago but then came the quest to recreate the flavours and texture that have proved so popular.

In a factory in north Wales, more than 1,000 pieces of gum were created to more than 200 different formulae to make the gum ‘as good a chew’ as ever.

Spearmint and peppermint flavours went on sale in the US yesterday and it is hoped that it will go on sale here soon.

Rev7 already has one fan in Britain – London mayor Boris Johnson saw it come off Tube seats with ease at his Gum Gala show in July.

Los Angeles, 4 October 2010 (MIA) - Apparently your mom was right when she threatened to wash your mouth with soap if you lied. According to a study, lying creates a desire to clean the 'dirty' body part.

'The references to 'dirty hands' or 'dirty mouths' in everyday language suggest that people think about abstract issues of moral purity in terms of more concrete experiences with physical purity,' said Spike W.S. Lee, University of Michigan doctoral candidate in psychology.

He conducted the study with his colleague Norbert Schwarz, reports the journal Psychological Science.

For the study, Lee and Schwarz asked 87 students to play the role of lawyers competing with a colleague - Chris - for a promotion, said a Michigan release.

Each was asked to imagine they found an important document that Chris had lost and that returning the document would help his career and hurt their own career.

Each participant was instructed to leave Chris a message by either voice mail or e-mail, telling him who they were and either lying that they could not find his document or telling the truth that they had found the document.

Next, participants rated the desirability of several products as part of a supposed marketing survey and reported how much they were willing to pay for each product. The products included mouthwash and hand sanitizer.

Study participants who lied on the phone, leaving an untrue and malevolent voice-mail, felt a stronger desire for mouthwash and were willing to pay more for it than those who lied on e-mail.

And conversely, those who lied on e-mail felt a stronger desire for hand sanitizer and were willing to pay more for that.

On the other hand, saying nice and ethical things made it less appealing to clean the body part involved in conveying the message.

'This study shows how 'concrete' the metaphorical links are between abstract and concrete domains of life. Not only do people want to clean after a dirty deed, they want to clean the specific body part involved,' Schwarz said.

EUROPE: 'Coldest winter in 1,000 years' on its way...

                      Tuesday, 05 October 2010

After the record heat wave this summer, Russia's weather seems to have acquired a taste for the extreme.
Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years.
The change is reportedly connected with the speed of the Gulf Stream, which has shrunk in half in just the last couple of years. Polish scientists say that it means the stream will not be able to compensate for the cold from the Arctic winds. According to them, when the stream is completely stopped, a new Ice Age will begin in Europe.

So far, the results have been lower temperatures: for example, in Central Russia, they are a couple of degrees below the norm.

“Although the forecast for the next month is only 70 percent accurate, I find the cold winter scenario quite likely,” Vadim Zavodchenkov, a leading specialist at the Fobos weather center, told RT. “We will be able to judge with more certainty come November. As for last summer's heat, the statistical models that meteorologists use to draw up long-term forecasts aren't able to predict an anomaly like that.”

In order to meet the harsh winter head on, Moscow authorities are drawing up measures to help Muscovites survive the extreme cold.

Most of all, the government is concerned with homeless people who risk freezing to death if the forecast of the meteorologists come true. Social services and police are being ordered to take the situation under control even if they have to force the homeless to take help.

Moscow authorities have also started checking air conditioning systems in all socially important buildings. All the conditioners are being carefully cleaned from the remains of summer smog.

Since 2012 all mobile phone users will be able to fill their mobile devices using a special wireless chargers, said the Japanese company Fujitsu.

The company developed a system that is capable of without using a cable to charge various portable electronic devices like mobile phones, digital cameras and laptop computers.

Even drivers of electric cars will be able to use this technology to charge their vehicles. Fujitsu has demonstrated a prototype of its wireless system at a conference on Information and Communications University in Osaka.

Technology which is the first of its kind in the world, works on the basis of transmission of electricity by means of magnetic fields between the charger and electronic device. The system allows wireless charging a distance of several meters.

You will soon receive detailed 3D view of Earth

Два германски радарски сателити летаа многу блиску еден од друг бидејќи треба да ја направат најдеталниот тродимензионален приказ на целокупната Земјина површина.

Two German radar satellites were flying very close to each other because you need to make the most detailed three-dimensional view of the entire Earth surface.

Satellites "TenDEM-X" and "TerraSAR-X" approached at a distance of only 350 feet and circling the Earth at a speed of seven kilometers per second.

Probes will soon begin an intensive monitoring of the Earth, which will very precisely determine the differences on the surface.

This "Digital elevaciski model" (DEM) will have a multi-application, to improve safety in navigation of aircraft to better monitoring of areas threatened by flooding.

The satellite "TerraSAR-X" was launched in 2007, and "TenDEM-X" in June this year, and since then constantly approaching the other probe.

                          - Maneuvering is very complicated and we must admit that we were very nervous, "said the scientist from the German Space Agency (DLR), Manfred Zink.

BELGRADE - The forthcoming winter in the Balkans can be long and cold, with temperatures up to minus 30 degrees forecast individual meteorological stations in Serbia and the Balkans, Tanjug news agency, adding however that the long-term weather forecasts are not particularly accurate. Chief of the Center for analysis and forecasts in the Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia Branko Micev indicates that the northeastern part of Europe and much of Siberia in July were affected by the very warm air, unusual for these regions. He believes you should expect a reaction, according to the prognosis of the institution of the European Centre for Medium-term forecast at Reading, near London, is that this winter in the Balkans will be particularly harsh. Micov adds that in some parts of Europe can expect temperatures to minus 40 degrees.

Appearance, and many others, which are taken into account in the preparation of seasonal forecasts to reflect the time anywhere in the world, experts say.

Moscow, 28 October 2010 (MIA) - 102 years after the fall of the famous celestial body in Tunguska taiga, scientists finally managed to identify the crash site of one of its fragments and examine the unusual composition of the substance of this space creature. The study was conducted using a unique instrument - GPR. As a result, it was proved that it was not a meteorite, but a comet.

The mystery of the Tunguska meteorite has long attracted the attention of researchers from around the world. Perhaps no visitor from outer space in the history of the mankind created so much noise, both literally and figuratively.

The most surprising is the fact that in some hundred-odd years that have passed since that event, scientists have failed to solve this puzzle.

What happened in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River back in 1908? The witnesses say that on June 30 at about 7am something resembling a giant ball flew over the territory of Central Siberia in the north-western direction.

Its flight was accompanied by sound and light effects, and ended with a powerful explosion followed by a felling of forest between the rivers Kimchu and Hushmo - tributaries of the Podkamennaya Tunguska.

The explosion occurred at 7:14am local time. It was accompanied by a powerful earthquake which was registered by most seismological stations of the world, and air waves.

It was noted that the echo of the explosion at Tunguska was heard over 800 kilometers away from the epicenter, the blast felled 2100 km² of forest, and within a radius of 200 km windows of some houses were broken. Soon after, a magnetic storm began which lasted 5 hours.
