Greek debt slashed to junk status

By business editor Peter Ryan

Updated June 15, 2010
Not everyone is convinced Greece can meet its debt obligations. (Reuters: John Kolesidis)

Sovereign debt fears in Europe are spreading, with the international ratings agency Moody's downgrading Greek government debt to junk status.

The agency made the move despite the European Union's multi-billion-dollar bailout package, and now there is speculation that foreign banks are steering clear of countries like Spain.

The downgrade by Moody's was not unexpected. Back in April, Standard and Poor's also slashed Greek government debt to junk status, warning investors might get less than a third of their outlay back.

But the latest move comes after the European Union and the IMF intervened with a $130 billion bailout package.

Moody's says the rating incorporates a greater, albeit low, risk of default. But not everyone is convinced Greece can meet its debt obligations.

Charles Jenkins from The Economist Intelligence Unit says Greece's debt is difficult to manage.

"It is now absolutely clear that Greece has got a combination of deficits and debt levels, which will be extremely difficult to manage and it may be that they will have to write down some of that debt," he said.

"[The] $130 billion is a loan, it's not a gift and it's a loan at a fairly high interest rate - not as high as market rates, but fairly high, around 9 per cent. So it has to be paid back.

"Now, it will cover Greece for the next couple of years or so. So Greece should be able to tackle its problems without worrying too much about what the markets are doing over the next 18 months to two years.

"But after that the loan will run out and other governments are not going to be willing to just thump up indefinitely."

The risk, according to Moody's, is that the tough austerity measures Greece has implemented will only damage the country even more and make the chance of an eventual default even greater.

Fears for safety of evicted migrants

Following the recent rape of a 3-year-old Afghan girl, Health Ministry officials and government advisers have expressed concern that operations to clean squatters out of abandoned buildings in Athens are leading to authorities having no records of undocumented migrants sleeping in the street.

The attack on the girl, who has not been named, took place in a square in Athens where her homeless family had been sleeping. It is alleged that an attacker, who authorities believe to be a portly Greek-speaking man who wears a crucifix, pulled the child aside while her parents slept and raped her behind some bushes. Authorities did not identify the square where the attack is alleged to have taken place.

Its not the first time someone in Greece with a crucifix around his neck that has committed something atrocious.

Thumbs up Cleaning Up Romania

Lets Do it Romania!

This project is the biggest project undertaken in Romania in which the objective is to clean up Romania and its environment.

The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism has supported this initiative that was replicated from the Estonian model which had proved to be a huge success.

Feel free to look through the website and to ask any questions or provide any feedback if you wish.

Just as Greece thought things could not get any worse.

GREECE BATTLES WEST NILE OUTBREAK

Athens, 18 August 2010 (MIA) - Greece's health ministry has said it was stepping up the fight against West Nile virus which has killed three people since the beginning of the month, AFP reported.

Some 47 people were diagnosed with the virus on Monday including 11 new cases discovered over the weekend, according to a statement from the Centre for the Control and Prevention of Diseases (KEELPNO).

Of this total, 45 patients have been diagnosed with encephalitis - an inflammation of the brain caused by the virus - of whom three elderly patients, also suffering from unrelated diseases, died. According to KEELPO, seven of the 28 people hospitalised on Monday are in intensive care.

The virus, transmitted through infected mosquito bites, has so far affected populations in northern Greece, in a zone stretching from Larissa to the northern city of Salonica, in close proximity to lakes and rivers.

The health ministry has ordered that efforts to spread insecticides in the region be intensified, targeting areas where contamination is highest. A campaign to inform the public will also be launched.

KEELPNO's Doctor Doritsa Bakka said the virus has been found in the past in Greece but had never before caused encephalitis.

She said the spread of the disease had been encouraged by a hot and wet summer, an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos.

ETHNOS: "US TAPS SKOPJE ON THE SHOULDER"

Athens, 31 August 2010 (MIA) - "The United States taps Skopje on the shoulder" is the comment of Greek daily "Ethnos" regarding the latest statement of US Ambassador to Macedonia Philip Reeker that Washington's position with regard to a name settlement between Greece and Macedonia doesn't envisage the constitutional name or the Constitution of the country to be changed.

The newspaper says that Reeker with his statements from an interview with Skopje TV station "Alfa" is in fact advocating the "double name formula" to be accepted as a solution to the name issue between Skopje and Athens i.e. a compromise solution to be found which would substitute the reference FYROM, while the name the Republic of Macedonia would be used internally and in bilateral communication with states that have already recognised the constitutional name.

Philip Reeker, the newspaper adds, assures that the resolution would not alter the Macedonian identity and language.

- We think that the solution should not change the constitutional name or the Constitution. It is your Constitution, your sacred document. It is necessary both sides, Greece and Macedonia, to reach an agreement on a single international name, which would replace FYROM and where it will be used. We support efforts to be made to focus on the real issue, not on the issues of identity or language - it refers to finding a resolution which will allow to preserve the Constitution and to join NATO, "Ethnos" cites Reeker's statement.

The daily comments that his statements come ahead of an anticipated new initiative by UN mediator Matthew Nimetz aimed at settling the name row while seeking for a formula to overcome the deadlocked situation in the name talks.

It is due to be determined whether the statements of Ambassador Reeker fully reflect the official US position and whether Athens is familiar with the new framework in the name talks, comments "Ethnos".

Bill, bratko, are your suffering from AMNESIA or some other ILLNESS that is affecting your rational thought process?

From a Macedonian PATRIOTIC perspective, there is lots of things one can say about the RAMKOVIST CONSTITUTION, but certainly NOT "OURS" and NOT "SACRED"!

I see what you say. I should have made it more clear that i was Talking specificly about the constitutional name and not the Entire rearanged constitution.

Let me single out the whole sentence i picked on and tried to make a point.

Quote:

My beef was with Reeker on one hand wants to respect as he put it a "Sacred Document" which includes our constitutional name. But i know for a fact tommorow i will read him playing a different tune regarding our name. I am sick of words and pricks from the west contradicting them selves which is why i said (same old Bullshit)

Another thing, constitution can be changed. So if Reeker is for respecting this sacred document, Will he feel the same if we reinstated the original constitution? would it be a "sacred document" and would his homeland respect it then?
