After numerous irregularities in the master election list that exist since 2001, the Macedonian Government has sent field workers and try to identify what went 'wrong'.
These 140,000 non existent 'voters' in effect are the deciding factor for 14 out of 120 members in Parliament. For instance, if it wasn't for these shadow voters, parties such as the LDP, DPA, NSDP, New Alternative will never see the day of light. The parties noted above combine for 14 parliament seats.
Government field workers noted frequent irregularities with the deceased individuals. For example, in Gostivar more than 300 deceased people have the right to vote. Thousands of others were found to have two social security numbers, which is illegal. Government field workers also believes there are thousands of people living in Macedonia who do not hold Macedonian citizenship, but cast their vote come election time even though the law prohibits them from doing so.
Eyebrows were raised during last national elections when 1.8 million votes were casted, even though Macedonia has 2.1 million population. According to the Macedonian election commission, the true number of voters hovers around 1.6 million, not more.
Government officials are encouraging for a quick and elaborate clean up of the electoral voting list. Experts expect the new electoral list to be completed by the end of October.
