        KARPOS UPRISING (1689)

        Abour Karpos uprising

The Turks after being defeated, by the Austrian-Polish troops in Vienna in 1683, were force to retreat. This defeat resulted various risings in the southern parts of the Balkan Peninsula. While the Austrians were spreading terror in the Turkish regions in Serbia and getting more deeply in the European part of Turkey, in Macedonia by the way, there were the aggressive troops of the local movement for liberation, that was becoming an local uprising. That uprising according the history, is known as the Karpos uprising.

The life of the miners of the Kratovo basin was unbearable. Exploitation reached a culmination point and the miners rose under the leadership of the Karpos, a peasant miner and from other side and Ajdut. The liberated and fortified Kratovo, Kriva Palanka and came far as Veles and Demir Kapija (Iron Door). This is a reason that the Turkish Sultan sent message to the Grand Vizier's of Nis, Leskovac, and Vranje to attack this "outlaw formations". He even mentioned that those like Karpos to be punished on every possible way, who was already a leader to 15,000 uprisers. It is of great honor to mention that, the Karpos uprising was supported by the Austrian King Leopold 1st, who set Karpos as king of Kumanovo. After this event, the uprisers 3,000, tried to take over the control with Skopje and were supported by the Austrian army. Then, the Austrians appeared outside Skopje but were driven away by the Turks who, during that time were defeated on several occasions by the Austrians. The Austrian general Picolomini led his army through Kosovo (then a Turkish province) and Kachanik and penetrated as far as Skopje. The Austrians defeated the Turkish troops and with the help of the rebels entered Skopje which had already been liberated. The Austrians were amazed. An Austrian officer mentions that:

"Skopje is spread over a large area and is only a little smaller than Prague. The town is surrounded by beautiful orchards in a large and rather fertile and well cultivated plain. It has almost 60,000 inhabitants, among them 2,000 Jews."

Skopje 1689 - Stone Bridge in Skopje with the tree of which he was tortured and hanged Karpos

Picolomini captured in Skopje on October 25th, 1689. He didn't intend to go south, but the wanted to go on to Durres (Drach) through Albania. However first of all, he wished to destroy the Turkish fortification and thus to fill the Turks with terror. But unfortunately, there was an epidemy of illness, and the next day on October 26th, the general Picolomini commanded his soldiers to set fire in Skopje, and like Nero he watched the fire while listening to the music of his military band. He wrote all this to his king, Leopold 1st. After the fire, the Austrian army withdrew to Kačanik Pass and Kosovo. But the general Picolomini, had been infected by the plague in Skopje, and he died in the morning of November 9th. The general forces of the uprising that were settled in the liberated towns, Kriva Palanka and Kumanovo.
        The end of Karpos uprising
After the massive attacks of the Turkish-Tatar troops, this cities fall again under Turkish rule. The Turks gathered their army and the staff held a counsel at Edrine, where the question of overcoming the uprising of the Macedonian miners under the leadership of Karpos was discussed. The task was carried out by Halil Pasha, who retook all the places that have been liberated by the miners. Skopje was the last to surrender. Karpos was captured in Kumanovo and brought to Skopje where he was hung on a tree near the Stone Bridge, butchered by soldiers and thrown into the muddy waters of the Vardar river. This was the bloody and the tragic end of the Karpos uprising, at the beginning of December 1689.

Looks good, but 540,000 euros is alot of money.

It's great. Macedonia needs this. Up until now, we had no reminders of the past. Skopje was a city with no character. I say good on the government for taking this initiative. People need to take pride in this.

Thanks for giving us some of the history TLWR!
From the village of P’pezhani, Tashko Popov, Dimitar Popov-Skenderov and Todor Trpenov were beaten and sentenced to 12 years prison. Pavle Mevchev and Atanas Popov from Vrbeni and Boreshnica joined them in early 1927, they were soon after transferred to Kozhani and executed. As they were leaving Lerin they were heard to shout "With our death, Macedonia will not be lost. Our blood will run, but other Macedonians will rise from it"

Now for my thoughts: the idea of having these statues are good but the cost of 540,000 is too high when you consider that the government cut back on the quality of the bronze (assuming it is bronze at all?) and pocketed the money for themselves. For example the Goce and Dame statues were very expensive and yet they already went through 50 years worth of oxidization in just a couple of months. At this rate holes in the statue from corrosion will start to form soon. The same goes for the new neo-classical style buildings on the Vardar river, the idea is right but obviously there are people in the government who are profiting a lot from the construction of these buildings. If the government really wanted more neo-classical buildings, they could have spent their resources restoring all of the remaining facades in Bitola, but obviously there isn't much to profit from "restoring facades".

Where'd ya get that picture from?I see he's wearing a shirtIve read that the Austrian emperor gave Karpos some kind of hat as a sign of recognition...wouldve been nice if they threw that in there.

As far as the price goes...i agree....540 grand is a little too steep....just a little.

Why is there still debate on this Forum that this project is too expensive, it is a mere drop in the sky compared to what Croatia and Slovenia spent in the early 90's, whilst we at that time were to scared to breath out of fear or rocking the boat

Also again and again new and renovated architecture is also a big part of the entire scheme NOT!!!! just bronze statues

And yes I would love to see the old facades in Bitola renovated, but Bitola is the most forgotten city in Makedonia

Middle ages the Ottomans & Karpos rebellion in Kumanovo

The city of Kumanovo was first mentioned in 1519 in a document housed in a Turkish archive in Istanbul. The most comprehensive and relevant information on Kumanovo is provided by Evlija Celebija in 1660:
"The colony of Kumanovo is situated on the territory of the Skopje sanjak and represents one county. The city is embellished with many rivers and 600 tile-roofs houses. The mosque in the downtown is beautiful, there are teke, madrassa (Islamic religious secondary school), caravanserai(Turkish bath), a number of shops and water mills; and the climate is pleasant and agreeable. There are many vineyards and gardens."

Kumanovo became an urban settlement and administrative center of the region at the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century. Following the turbulent events (the Karpos rebellion in 1689) the city experienced a period of stagnation, and by the end of 18th century Kumanovo epitomized an Ottoman provincial town.
A great rebel leader named Karpos was born in a village near Kumanovo called Vojnik. Initially, he was a vassal of Turks, but when the Ottoman empire began to weaken in 1689 and discontent rose concerning new higher taxation policies, Karpos became a turning point in the battle versus the Turks. In that period Austria staged an attack on the Ottoman Empire. Then the Karpos seized upon the situation and the uprising quickly spread to the rebels freeing Kratovo, Kriva Palanka, Kumanovo, Kacanik and in other towns. Then, together with the Austrian army, lead by Emperor Leopold 1st, they fought to liberate Skopje and Štip.
Later there was a change in the military and political situation in the Balkans, which had a crucial effect on the rebellion. The Austrian army was forced to withdraw and powerful Turkish forces, reinforced by Tatar detachments belonging to the Crimean Khan Selim Giral, attacked the rebels. After fierce battles the Turks took Kriva Palanka, the rebel stronghold, and then attacked Kumanovo and its newly-constructed fortress. Karpos was captured, removed to Skopje, and put to death on the Stone Bridge across the Vardar.
                            Kumanovo in the 20th century
It developed economically in the late 19th century (agriculture, handcrafts and trade). Still, industrial development occurred only at the end of the Second World War. The rapid economic, administrative and cultural expansion of Kumanovo began in 1945. Today, it is a modern city with approximately 70,000 inhabitants.
The anti-fascist insurrection of Macedonians and the struggle for national and social liberation began in Kumanovo and Prilep on October 11th, 1941.
The Macedonians originates it, the Bulgarians imitate it and the Greeks exploit it!

Now its not bronze? funny I saw the 'article' on A1 about this. The bronze exeperts all agreed that the oxidation and its rate was normal, but the real 'experts' a1 reporters that is, did not agree with them.

Do you draw your expertise in the matter from another avenue than the a1 reporters? or simply believe everything you are spoon fed?

^^ I was comparing photos online, and the recent photos of the statues showed a weird blue-green rust forming, and the statues' original shiny finish had disappeared. I am no expert, but the first thing that came to mind was that the statues were made of some cheap material, or the air quality in Skopje is really bad.

If the statue cost over half a million euros, so be it. But at least give the people what they are paying for, with that much money being spent there shouldn't be any problems like this.

Macedonians really need to stop putting 100% trust in their politicians. If history has taught us anything, it is that our politicians have always ended up betraying us. Same goes for A1.
