Macedonia is on knife edge, Nato chief says

Macedonia is on knife edge, Nato chief says
    25 March 2009 | 04:12 | FOCUS News Agency
Stockholm. Macedonia is on a knife edge, with its coalition government facing the dilemma of trying to offer concessions to ethnic Albanians without provoking the Slav majority, Lord Robertson, the Nato secretary general said last night, cited by The Guardian.
However, progress was being made in areas bordering Serbia and Kosovo, he said. This included the promise of peace talks this weekend between Serbia and ethnic Albanian leaders fighting in the Presevo valley - an area bordering Kosovo, southern Serbia, and Macedonia. Lord Robertson also said an agreement had been reached with Nato-led K-For peacekeepers which would allow lightly-armed Serb forces to enter two buffer zones along the northern and western border with Kosovo. It was essential, he said, to "marginalise" ethnic Albanian extremists whose objective - as it had been previously in Kosovo and southern Serbia - was to provoke a disproportionate reaction that would drag in outside forces.
Nato, the UN, and the EU are all pressing the Macedonians to reach a political solution, including a higher status for the Albanian language, more Albanians in public administration and more money for the Albanian university in Tetovo, Macedonia's second city. Lord Robertson said the UN had estimated that 18,000 ethnic Albanians had left their homes in Macedonia, 11,000 of them displaced inside the country. At a London briefing, he conceded that some Nato governments were reluctant to move more of their troops to Kosovo's border with Macedonia. Though he did not name the countries concerned, they are believed to include the US.
Asked if K-For troops could not have done more to police the border, he replied: "It is very, very difficult territory".
However, the Macedonian president, Boris Trajkovski, made his view quite plain yesterday. "We think they [K-For] have to improve their presence on the border," he said in Stockholm where he is attending the EU summit.
Lord Robertson said he was optimistic that Nato countries would send extra troops to Kosovo, although he has scaled down his request from an extra 1,400 soldiers to what he called yesterday "six companies " - about 600 troops. Germany yesterday announced plans to send around 130 extra soldiers from its artillery battery in Kosovo to Skopje on Sunday to reinforce German K-For patrols on the border. The defence ministry spokesman, Detlef Puhl, said the new troops would take charge of four self-propelled guns which would be brought out of reserve. A company of 100 to 150 men which had been due to be withdrawn from the area would also be kept in place. EU leaders welcomed Mr Trajkovski yesterday to support him in his conflict with ethnic Albanian rebels and push him toward reforms that ease tense ethnic tensions. The leaders heard a report from Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy supremo, its external affairs commissioner Chris Patten, and Anna Lindh, the Swedish foreign minister, who have all visited Skopje in the last few days to discuss ways in which the violence could be contained. Mr Trajkovski was urged to meet demands for a greater role in Macedonian society for the ethnic Albanians and call on Albanians in neighbouring countries - especially in Kosovo - to distance themselves from the fighting. EU leaders have a significant carrot to offer: next month the union is to sign a "stabilisation and association agreement" with Macedonia that requires it to work for peaceful resolution of its internal conflicts. The Macedonian leader was told of Brussels' backing for his country's territorial integrity and Nato's pledge to step up efforts to prevent guerrilla infiltration across the Kosovo-Macedonia border.
It is the Macedonian majority dickhead!

Oh, and now Macedonia is being called upon to tell the Albanians in neighbouring countries to distance themselves from fighting. Die already.

Note his use of the term "Slavs" to desribe the ethnic character of non-Albanians.

Also note how there is no respect for the current borders of Macedonia, or its soveriegnty, or its Constitution - the Albanians are not treated as a minority, but as an ethnic block who deserving of rights that would effectively make our Constitution not worth the paper its written on.

This kind of racist fk needs a bullet in the head, and this is why we can never use the term "Slavs" to describe ourselves, even though fk heads in the republic continue to do so.

Athens demands explanation about Merkel's statement on Greek veto

            Athens / 27/03/09 / 19:04
Athens is furious over the statements of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel relating the Greek veto on Macedonia's admission in NATO, the Athens' daily Eleftheros Typos wrote in the electronic edition.

According to the same source, at an extraordinary session of the German Parliament, Merkel said that the Alliance's enlargement is of exceptional importance and stressed that the Alliance "should not have allowed to certain countries to introduce its own rules by resorting to veto."

The Greek Embassy in Berlin asked for explanation of the Merkel's statement. According to the information, Merkel alluded not to Greece, but to Russia in her statement, which stands adamantly against the membership of Ukraine and Georgia in NATO.

The spokesman of the Greek Government came up with a similar statement, who said that there are no negative conclusions, if the statement is read out carefully.

"There is an unison position in NATO that the neighboring country cannot join the Alliance, unless a solution on the name is found," the spokesman said.
yes of course macedonia will join NATO unless a solution on the name is found, yes, squire

MEP Deva: No one takes Greece seriously

MEP Deva: No one takes Greece seriously
                    http://macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/6322/1...

British member of EU Parliament Nirj Deva today spoke to Macedonian media about the so called 'name dispute' with Greece. According to him, Greece is becoming increasingly isolated in the EU to a point that no MEP's take the Greek MEP's seriously.

"With great level of certainty, I can say that Greece does not have a big lobby in the EU. The Greeks themselves are seeing that we are openly laughing in their faces at how absurd their demands and comments are regarding Macedonia. Their immature responses coming from a mature administration does not bode well for the regional and global security" says Nirj Deva, MEP.

"The Macedonian army is presently in Afghanistan, we appreciate their contribution in the fight against terrorism and illicit drugs and this is why we believe Greece's response to be immature", added Deva.

                    Strong rhetoric from Karamanlis

Earlier today, Greek PM while visiting Pella, issued a strong statement that Macedonia must change its name if it wishes to join Euro-Atlantic organizations. Karamanlis' party ND has seen a dip in recent polls and is destined to lose the next elections. According to Greek Media, Karamanlis has said he would step down as the head of ND and may retire if his party loses the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Greece's stance has been severely damaged by the U.S. Administration. The U.S. was Athens' last hope that some of the big powers may change their mind and side with Greece. President Obama's speech at the NATO Summit confirmed the U.S. policy will not change, as expected.

                    Cards are Open

Athens for the first time, have officially admitted their aim is to completely wipe out the term "Macedonian". The name of the country had only been a starting point. Greek FM Bakoyannis in a letter to her Macedonian counterpart, revealed that the "name" game had been started to erase the nationality of the Macedonians, which will be replaced with a geographical term.

One of MiNas political analysts says the Macedonian Government has no intention to backtrack at all with Greece, because if it does, Albania will use their NATO membership to seek cultural and or territorial autonomy from Macedonia (Serbia, Montenegro). The same source says the name dispute will not be solved for years to come.

“Presently Athens is pushing for things, led by their belief the Macedonian Government will crack because of their desire to quickly enter the EU and NATO. For these purposes Athens is using several Macedonian politicians to achieve their dirty goals. When Athens realizes their aims are not achievable and or their proxies inside Macedonia are too weak or defeated, they will simply give up. Macedonia should not be in a hurry to enter any organization,” says our analyst while giving kudos to the Government for their lawsuit at the Hague which will bring further spotlight and international attention.

It also suggests Macedonia to increase its lobbying in the EU and continue to nourish great bilateral ties with the U.S.A, Italy, Russia, Turkey and the United Kingdom.//04.12.09

Is he introducing a genocide bill? Is he introducing a bill to place sanctions on grease for refusal to recognize the 1 million Macedonians living under the most brutal and fascist regime in Europe?

Athens afraid for its position after Macedonian elections

Organizing elections in accordance with international standards is significant step of Macedonia towards NATO integration undoubtedly, Macedonian newspaper Vecer writes today. In spite of the fact that Sweden, which will take over as the next EU presidency hadn’t specified its priorities yet, Stockholm clearly stresses that it will back the enlargement. Sweden representatives are firm that it is very important not only for the states that will aim at EU membership but for the union itself.
Vecer newspaper quotes further the Greek Vima newspaper saying that regarding Skopje the mood in Europe seem to be slightly relented after the presidential elections. Athens is in difficult position now, due to the fact that Swedish EU presidency has already announced its stand that Skopje should set a day for talks.

"Server" says he will call Macedonians - Macedonians !!!

                            Washington / 19/06/09 / 08:50
I will call the citizens of Macedonia by their name, and that is Macedonians, Daniel Server, director of Balkan Initiative at the Institute for Peace, told Voice of America's Macedonian news.

"Any solution that could be agreed by both sides is a fair solution. As I have said, it is not important to me what is written on a piece of paper in the UN. I will simply call Macedonians - Macedonians as long as they want me to stop calling them by this name," Server said while commenting the proposal "Northern Macedonia".

He added that the United States should pile pressure on both sides to work out a solution, noting that Greece has a powerful negotiating position because it is a member of NATO and EU, and Macedonians should take this into account.
Asked to tell why a compromise on the name seems a long way off, Server said he thought that the issue should have been resolved a long time ago. Now, it becomes less important to me," Server told Voice of America's Macedonian news.

he looks into the future and decided to jump on the train earlier than later

Shame On Greece: Messing With Macedonia

old news but anyhow a topical theme

The Macedonians walked out of the NATO summit on Thursday and we can’t say we blame them.

Croatia and Albania were granted membership in the western alliance at a leaders’ meeting in Bucharest, but Macedonia was barred for an absurd reason: Greece doesn’t like its name.

That decision shames Greece and it dishonors NATO, which has far more serious problems and challenges to worry about.

The name “Macedonia,” is shared by the former Yugoslav republic and by northern Greece. From the moment the former-Yugoslav Macedonia declared independence in 1991, the Greeks — reflecting byzantine Balkan politics — vehemently objected to the new state’s use of a name and symbols they regard as theirs.

As a result, the United Nations provisionally designated the country as “the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” — or, rather uneuphonically: FYROM.

Athens has since normalized relations and many countries, including the United States, have abandoned the clumsy FYROM in favor of Republic of Macedonia, which is what Macedonia calls itself.

A United Nations mediator tried to work out a compromise but in the end, Greece — a NATO member since 1952 — exercised its veto. The alliance operates on consensus.

Tiny Macedonia doesn’t threaten Greece under any name. In fact, bringing it into the NATO fold would enhance regional stability. Now, there are concerns Macedonia’s failure to gain alliance membership could fan nationalism and anti-Western sentiment as well as jeopardize its ability to join the European Union.

President Bush and European leaders should have worked harder at finding a solution to this corrosive problem before Greece exercised its veto.

Now they must ratchet up the pressure on Greece to achieve that compromise so that NATO’s insult to Macedonia is reversed as quickly as possible.
