Republic of Macedonia.

      Greece 'FYROM-izes' Macedonia's Car Plates
      21 JUN 12 / 10:29:28

Greek border services have started covering the letters "MK" on Macedonian car number plates with a sticker of their own, marking a new low in Greek-Macedonian relations.

Greek border guards have begun covering the letters "MK" on Macedonian car plates with a sticker, in Greek and English, reading: “Recognized by Greece as FYROM” [Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia].

The Greek liaison office in Skopje confirmed the new practice, saying the country had a right to do this under the 1995 UN interim agreement that regulates relations between the two states.

They say this will affect only vehicles with the new plates containing the letters MK.

Macedonia introduced new number plates in February, saying they were needed to meet EU standards. Unlike the old ones, the new plates feature MK in small letters in the corner.

Macedonia's Interior Ministry said it was surprised by the move and was still considering its reaction.

Relations between Macedonia and Greece have been strained for two decades by the row over Macedonia's name. Greece insists that use of the term "Macedonia" implies a territorial claim to its own northern province of the same name.

Citing the unresolved issue, Greece has been blocking Macedonia’s progress towards both EU and NATO membership. UN-brokered talks to overcome the dispute have so far failed to yield a solution.

The Greek move could potentially have a major impact on tourism, as Greece is a top summer destinations for many Macedonians - and many drivers may object to having their cars tampered with in this way.

In the summer of 2011 there were some 400,000 entries of Macedonian citizens to Greece, records show.

The UN recognised Macedonia under the provisonal term of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, or FYROM, in 1993 - but most Macedonians strongly resent use of the term.

Greek Elite Scuba Diving Team Forced to stop singing about 'glorious Macedonia'

"Shut your mouths, that song is banned" was an order from a Greek commanding officer after a group of what appear to be elite scuba diving soldiers sang 'glorious Macedonia' while marching in the city of Pazar.

At first the soldiers were warned with a loud whistle, but since they continued singing the commanding officer ran up to them and forced them to stop.

The soldiers were instructed to sing a song in which the 'greekness' of Macedonia is celebrated by thieir group leader who appeared very angry when a higher ranking Army officer prevented them.
The group leader went as far as to complain to Greece's Minister of Defense who confirmed that there was indeed a directive by the highest ranks in the Army banning the song.

What is it that the soldiers sang?
"Macedonia, land of Alexander. You got rid of the tyrants (referring to the Macedonians), and now you are free. You were and you remain Greek. Greeks were and are proud, Macedonians can not live oppressed. Even if they lose everything, freedom will remain. Macedonians play, be happy."

This is part of the song "Glorious Macedonia". Not necessarily a masterpiece or a catchy song, unfortunately Greece at this time can only afford the services of Steve Gaga, the little known brother of Lady Gaga. //Meri Sazdovska

          This is not a provocation.
This is confirmation of an agreement that Macedonia went to court to enforce last year.
Greece is well entitled to do this. Macedonia wants FYROM so bad it went to court for it.

Greece to be kicked out of NATO for its behavior towards Macedonia: survey

Greece to be kicked out of NATO for its behavior towards Macedonia: survey

Washington, 16 May 2012 (MIA) - Greece is the NATO member-state most likely to be kicked out of the Alliance because of its behaviour towards Macedonia and Turkey, shows a survey of the Atlantic Council and Foreign Policy magazine.

The two renowned institutions polled about 60 renowned heads of state, ministers of defense and foreign affairs, intelligence officers, and current and former members of Congress.

When asked which country they would kick out of NATO, Greece won comfortably with 18 votes, followed by Hungary (5), Turkey (4), Iceland (3), whereas 22 respondents said all member-states should remain in the Alliance.

Respondents said the reasons for Greece's NATO expelling were the its behavior towards Macedonia and Greece, as well as "its boundlessly selfish egotism and disruptive tactics".

On the other hand, when asked which country should join NATO, Macedonia was second with six votes, behind Sweden (13), but ahead of Australia, Georgia and the Ukraine with five each.

In the survey, (http://www.acus.org/event/atlantic-c...ey-future-nato), respondents said the economic crisis is the biggest challenge for the transatlantic alliance, followed by nationalism and internal divisions. All respondents said NATO should continue to exist and the United States should remain in the Alliance. Only ten supported the idea of Russia joining NATO, whereas 19 left this option open for the future.

Interventions in Bosnia and Kosovo have been assessed as most successful, whereas the war in Afghanistan as the least successful undertaken by NATO.

When asked if NATO's European members could have conducted the operation in Libya without U.S. assistance, 48 respondents said "No".

Respondents included Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Lithuanian Defense Minister Rasa Jukneviciene, U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, former Congressmen Jim Kolbe, former Bulgarian Defense Minister Boyko Noev, Members of European Parliament Ioan Mircea Pascu and Ana Maria Gomes, analysts Daniel Serwer and Sally McNamara etc.

                Turkey supports Macedonia's NATO membership

Skopje, 16 May 2012 (MIA) - Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki on the second day of his trip to Turkey met with President Abdullah Gul, Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Bagis and with chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee of the Grand National Assembly, Volkan Bozkir.

Overall political relations between the two countries were praised at the meeting with Turkey's President, MoFA says.

"President Gul focused on the forthcoming NATO summit in Chicago, voicing Turkey's full support for Macedonia's integration to NATO and reiterated the position that it was necessary Macedonia to join NATO as soon as possible, which will be personally advocated by him at the Chicago event," reads the press release.

Minister Poposki underscored the importance of the traditionally favourable relations and support accentuated in several spheres of mutual interest.

"He underlines that there is room for boosting the level of cooperation, especially business ties in view of attracting Turkish investments and opening the Turkish market for Macedonian products," states the press release.

At a meeting with minister Bagis, views and experiences were exchanged in relation to EU integration processes. Both ministers expressed mutual readiness for signing a cooperation agreement on EU integration.

At a meeting with MP Volkan Bozkir, talks focused on the fruitful and excellent cooperation between countries' parliaments.

FM Poposki delivered Wednesday a lecture at TEPAV (Economic Policy Research Institute) in which he emphasised the need of enhancing regional cooperation.

We seem to have all this support, but when it's crunch-time, nobody tells greece to fuck off and accept Macedonia as a member of NATO

It's time for Macedonia to stop playing this sick game and seek alternative arrangements for its security

You should remember that these voters are NATO experts. For instance, one of them voted that Cyprus should be kicked out of NATO...
... well, even though Cyprus is not in NATO and never was.

No one should call anyone gypsy depicting something bad.

I can assure you that macedonians are allways welcome and there are thousands of macedonians who have many friends in Greece and exchange visits regularly. Dickheads and rascists are spread everywhere. It would be a defeat of friendship itself and intracultural exchange if these (criminal imo) actions will prevail.

grease should be careful because NATO could always just take control of areas of the country, ports airports etc it wants and turn the rest into a nomans land because they have been a headache in NATO for years and they defrauded the EU also so no one takes them seriously anymore
