Thats the price of a ticket to NATO. USA demands it from most of the candidates. Turkey sent troops to Korean war at 1950 and about 700 of our soldiers died in there. After the war, we became member of it.

The sacrifice of 700 Turkish soldiers is still thoroughly discussed in Turkey and people condemns the politicians who allowed Turkey to participate USA`s war just to be a member of NATO. Actually Turkey did this because Stalin had threaten Turkey because of our neutrality in WW-2 and he was planning to invade eastern Anatolia shortly after the war. Our economy was broke because of the war and politicians felt that we need a protection of NATO against communists.

Nevertheless, people still condemns the sacrifice of 700 soldiers after 60 years and i agree to your comment because if your people dies only for USA`s war for energy sources, then you wont be able to explain this to your people either.

as I said in a previous post, We also have Australian soldiers dying in Afghanistan. One that recently died was known to my son. We are "fighting" ghosts, protecting poppy fields and the so called recent discovery (ha ha recent my butt) of the trillion dollar mineral resources there is the proof
Pull every Macedonian (and Australian ) soldier out of these war zones, they are only there to assist yankee doodle get fatter and greedier and more selfish and destructive to minority countries

Today NATO membership serves only one purpose and that's protection from the meddling and interference of the USA.
This was clearly shown in 2001 when America fabricated a situation of destabilization in Macedonia, forcing the Macedonian Government to be an American lapdog.

Well, when Turkey became member of NATO, it was recently formed after WW-2 and the situation was so different. Like a said, Stalin was hostile towards Turkey and he was saying that we are indirectly supporting Germany by remaining neutral and also USSR always perceived Turkey as a major threat since 1930s because they were thinking that we could try to take back the lands which they took from us at Ottoman Empire era, by gaining influence upon Azeri and other Turkic people. During WW-2, they became more anxious because USSR was able to continue the war by supplying oil only from Khazar sea at Azeri lands. Tatars also allied with Nazis against Stalin to take revenge of Russian pressure and assimilation upon them for half a century. During the last year of the war, Stalin killed 10.000s of Tatars and expelled 1000s to Turkey and he wanted to permanently cut our connection with Azeris by invading eastern Anatolia to settle Armenians between Azeris and Turkey.

Thats why Turkey wanted to became member of NATO but USA also wanted to take Turkey on their side as well. Actually NATO helped us so much for improving our military technology at 1960s but USA did this for creating a major force in Anatolia to scare Russians, not for Turkey`s military development.

Now, cold war is over and NATO pretty much lost it`s importance. Besides that, Turkey can develop her own technology for a decade and we don't need NATO anymore. Some people are looking skeptical for the NATO bases in Turkey for a while. There is one huge NATO base in Izmir too. It`s full of USA soldiers and most of them are annoying people. They are either recent immigrants from southern America or stupid yankees. They are vulgar, ignorant, always speaks in loud voice and their kids are even more annoying. Whenever i see their kids at night clubs or bars here, they get extremely drunk and start a fight most of the time by pestering people`s girlfriends.


IMO, being a member of NATO can be useful for ROM but you have to think about USA`s possible demands from you and always try to keep a balance between the profits and the negative points. For example, Korean war was the first and last time when Turkish army participated USA`s war in active combat. We didn't participate both first and second war on Iraq and we didn't even allow USA/British soldiers to use Turkey`s soil for any reason at 2nd war on Iraq. We got few 100 soldiers in Afghanistan but they only participate in charity stuff. They never involved in active combat. USA constantly demands from Turkey to send troops to enter active combat but we always refuse that. Only exception was Bosnian war but we preferred and wanted to be active in Bosnia ourselves. Rather strangely that time, USA did everything to delay or prevent Turkey to participate active combat in Bosnia.

Onur, NATO is good at making sure the casualties of war are anyone but US.
Australia has lost several young men as has Macedonia for NATO and the pricks cant recognise us under our name , Macedonia, yet the blood of our Macedonian boys is good enough for them. Not being a member of NATO would benefit Macedonia, they have some misguided sense of being allowed into the US boys club EU and NATO if they can have enough of our boys die for their stupidity and greed and wealth.
