Ukraine's War Hits Macedonian Marriage Prospects

Wife-seeking bus trips to Ukraine for lonely Macedonian bachelors have been suspended because of the hostilities

Mayor Milosim Vojnevski concocted a plan to bring a busload of single men to Ukraine in order to find brides.

The Ukraine conflict has hit Macedonia’s lonely bachelors hard. For some men in isolated communities, the lack of women has meant a life of utter solitude. But a shortage of men in Ukraine and some creative thinking by one mayor have sparked a potential lifeline.

Working in collaboration with the Macedonian Embassy in Kiev, Milosim Vojneski, the mayor of Makedonski Brod (a municipality of 8,500 residents spread over dozens of villages) hatched a plan to provide an all-expenses-paid bus trip to Ukraine for men between the ages of 35 and 50 interested in finding a wife.

“That is the most difficult group—they need help,” Vojneski says. “If they like each other, the women come back to Macedonia with them and we will pay for the wedding.”

A total of 24 men signed up, but the war in Ukraine put a damper on Vojneski’s plan. The trip is now postponed until further notice.

Rapid depopulation is causing despair in rural communities across Europe, and the problem is especially acute in the small Balkan country of Macedonia, with a population of just 2 million. Macedonia is one of the poorest countries of the Balkans, with unemployment approaching 28 percent. Women here are leaving the countryside in droves to marry city men, leaving behind villages full of bachelors.

In Brest, out of a population of 150, there are 23 unmarried men and no available women, according to locals. Just 20 years ago, there were 400 residents, many of whom worked in the Suvenir arms factory in nearby Samokov.

Macedonia was once the sunny, agricultural gem of greater Yugoslavia, dotted with factories that provided lifelong employment. But soon after the collapse of Yugoslavia in the early ’90s, many women left to find opportunities in urban centers and abroad. Meanwhile, local men stayed to tend the land of their grandfathers and inherit the family home.

Brane Atanaskoksi, 43, a chiseled-faced man with azure eyes and a few missing teeth, nurses a beer at the local café, which is also the village grocery. Atanaskoksi doesn’t care much which country his future wife comes from, as long as she’s willing to “stick around” and help with the work on his little farm.

Another man, 41-year-old Drago Mileski, a security officer who enjoys fishing and sports, longs for a wife who is “smart and compatible” and knows how to cook. He doesn’t care if she is fat or thin. He just wants “someone to share the good and the bad things in life and to work together.”

A visit to Brest is like going back almost a century. Bent old women scurry around, fetching water from the well. Near the wooden outhouse, pigs forage for food. The place smells of old wood, and animal droppings line the unpaved main street. The sound of chickens clucking is punctuated by the roar of a chainsaw, as a man cuts wood for the upcoming winter, still months away.

One of the lucky men is shop owner Goran Trpkoski, 43. His wife is Alida, 31, a stout-figured Albanian woman who bore him two children, a girl, 6, and a boy, 4. The couple met and spoke for just half an hour before a deal was arranged and he brought her across the border.

For the moment, the mayor arranges matchmaking bus trips to neighboring Albania. Over the course of four years, he has managed to match local men with 78 Albanian brides, resulting in 109 children.

But if the men of Brest can’t find more wives soon, the village will share the fate of more than a hundred abandoned Macedonian villages.

As Atanaskoksi took the last swig from his beer, the Albanian shopkeeper Alida Trpkoski promised she would do her best to help him find someone.

“But it would help if he wouldn’t drink so much,” she said. He promptly switched to coffee.

a very sad state of affairs.

Very sad to see what has happened to Macedonian society. Why do these men have to find some foreign wives and can't find any local women? Are our women living in some fantasy land when they don't care about anything other than money or living in skopje?

At the pace of the current demographics we are going to need to increase those foreign brides significantly since Macedonian women are having 1 kid at most.

...I would've thought that Macedonian men were part of the problem too.

I think those 'Albanian' wives are Macedonians from Mala Prespa. Macedonians have a bad habit of calling Macedonians from Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo (and Albania more broadly) 'Albanians'. Its a old Yugoslav habit that just doesn't want to die off.

Thats actually a very good point.

I thought it was just my family who did this (calling macedonians from albania as 'albanians). It was confusing and frustrating. I know a lot of women who have come to macedonia and married macedonian men. But its so hard to know if they are macedonians or albanians - im told two different things.

To be fair, some of these women one time say they are albanian while other days they are macedonians... so confusing.

Nothing against true albanian women, but i would rather macedonians marry women from the Ukraine (unless they are macedonians from albania).

Yeah i have to agree. Fair enough some of these guys are old fashioned and 'rough around the edges' but from my experience a lot of the younger macedonian women from RM are pretty shallow and pretty arrogant.

Most of these ladies would rather marry a man from western europe/UK. Just look at macedonian dating sites to confirm. A lot of them would rather marry a rich grk businessmen men or some fancy bulgarian gangster then a lowly macedonian 'peasant' who works on the land.

Most younger macedonian women dream of serbian athletes and spend their nights clubbing all day and spend the rest of the day sleeping in, living off grand dads government hand outs. Its embarrassing seeing this, even women in australia in their late 20's and ealry 30's are not this childish.

I think in macedonia they have a term for these type of women, something like 'shmigli' i think.

I dont blame most of these older macedonian men going over seas to find a good wife. Most of the time these women make better wives/mothers and also are better looking.

They like confusing stuff. In the few conversations I've had about it I've really had to press them to work out whether they were actual Albanians or Macedonians from Albania. It turns out they were Macedonians. A lot of Macedonians over there call Macedonians from Egej Greeks, which I particularly find annoying.

The dilapidated villages, the dying population, the lonely men, the unemployment numbers, the mail order brides...

We live in a technological age. Macedonian women do not live in the dark. They see the glitz and glamor of the West, and the riches in America and Europe, and they want to be a part of it. They want out of the life and lifestyles that their forefathers lived. They do not want to work off the land. They want a modern lifestyle.

The economic disparity in Macedonia does not allow most Macedonian men to furnish this need. Macedonian women are looking elsewhere. They are looking to get hitched to rich men outside of the republic. Macedonian men are also looking elsewhere.

They're the things that most people all over the world strive for, each generation wants something better for themselves and their children.
