Actually it has finished. By today, the 3rd Chamber is (I guess) fully cleaned and they’re now searching for secret passages or digging UNDER the floor of the 3rd Chamber.

As far as I understand there are no remains, actually there’s nothing (unless something is announced soon). No one is buried there. Thus, we will not even have reliable theories based on evidence. We will just have generic theories. The exact dating and details on the soil may help with these theories.

Did we really learn anything new from this excavation?

It was feared that a mysterious Alexander the Great-era tomb in northern Greece would never reveal who was buried there.

But now are fresh hopes that the ancient burial will give up its secrets, because archaeologists have found an ‘underground vault,’ which they hope holds the remains of one of the ancient leader’s relatives.

Greece’s Ministry of Culture has confirmed that an entrance to a subterranean room lies beneath the vast burial complex's third chamber.

Didn't think it was necessary to copy the whole article as this was the only interesting part.

Can anyone confirm this, have they found an entrance to a room underneath.

Nope, what this passage says is what was announced on Friday and is described in the previous 2 or 3 posts. The findings keep surprising us but the idea of a full burial chamber underneath the 3rd chamber is overoptimistic in my opinion. Anyway, this is their last hope.

The vault is what you see in the picture I posted.

Final announcements are expected in Wednesday. I don't trust the leaks, but it seems there's no good news.

It seems they have... removed the whole (limestone) floor of the third chamber and digging the sandy soil underneath until they reach the natural schist ground of the hill.

The announcement may mostly be about their next plans: scanning the hill and searching for other Macedonian Tombs in the hill (by the way that is a more realistic hope).

Now that the Amphipolis excavation finishes I should probably leave the forum too.

                    The Dead Man Found

                    Shocking revelations
                    Found dead Amphipolis!

The skeleton is almost intact - The genetic material will be examined by a specialist laboratory - Found in coffin found in a tomb in the burial monument hill castes

Culminates anxiety about the impressive findings identified in the tomb of Amphipolis. In the press briefing announced that skeleton was found, almost intact! The genetic material will be transferred to a special laboratory for testing in order to obtain the first data on the identity and ascertaining the exact age.

In the third chamber, namely depth 1.60m. of the surviving stones of the floor revealed a large cist tomb made of limestone.

The outer dimensions of the tomb is 3,23m length. Width 1.56 M. and preserved height of 1 m. However, found during excavations, superstructure uprights from the tomb, which allow us to consider that the height reached at least 1.80.

Within the tomb created a longitudinal deepening 0,54m.kai width 2,35m length. This is the position in which was placed a wooden coffin. Found scattered, iron and copper nails, and bone and glass decorative elements of the coffin. Note that the total height of the third chamber from the top of the dome to the bottom of the tomb is 8,90m.

In and out of the tomb, found the carcass of the dead. It is obvious that the anthropological material will be examined by experts. It is equally obvious that there will be any research that requires modern science.

The funerary complex on the hill castes is a public project, to build the largest amount used marble, which has never been used in Macedonia. To remind you of the details of its uniqueness: Tomb of EUR 33m, and on this pedestal with oversized lion, totaling 15.84. The sphinxes, the caryatids and beautiful mosaic with the abduction of Persephone, and the painted marble architraves, which, this time, maintained in the laboratory of the Museum of Amphipolis. Note the record level of the whole construction.

According to the announcement by the Ministry of Culture, this monument is unique and original synthesis of diverse characteristics. It is an extremely precise construction, the cost of which is obviously unlikely to have been taken by an individual.

Probably, this monument afiroismenou dead, ie mortal to whom religious values attributed by the society of his time. The deceased was a prominent figure, as the only way to explain the construction of this unique burial complex.

On November 22, the Minister of Culture and Sport Mr. K. Tasoulas be interviewed at the Museum of Amphipolis, in one afternoon on the findings and the next phase of work on the mound castes.

On November 29, Saturday, at 11:00 will present the results of the excavation season at the hill castes, the Inspector of Antiquities Serres K. Peristeri and partners, in Athens, in the Auditorium of the Ministry of Culture.

"Wait a minute, do a little patience," replied Anna Panagiotarea the enthusiastic reactions of journalists, adding that the anthropological material has been examined in a few days.

As announced, the third chamber, found a large makeshift tomb made of porous stones, 1.60 meters below the floor of the third chamber.

Also within the tomb elongated depressions observed width of 0.54 meters and a length of 2.35. During the press briefing revealed that within the tomb was a wooden coffin, which is evidenced by about 20 scattered iron and copper nails as well as bone and glass decorative coffin

So it is the skeletal remains of one human? This is most intriguing. What is the Greek media saying about this? What is the purpose of the proposed genetic test? What are the stated ambitions thereof?

That's too early to say. It is one man and I think (hope) it's clear that this is the buried man (not a looter). This seems looted since bones were found partly in and partly outside the coffin which was wooden. That's just the first info that’s coming out. So, the grave was under the floor of the burial chamber (look at the drawing at the link of my previous post). We would expect that the burial bed would be golden or marble.

Is there speculation on the identity of the skeleton?

What troubles me, if I understand correctly the dead is not burnt. The examination will show age, sex and other possible details. The press conference is held right now.
