At least 28 immigrants shot in Greece

At least 28 immigrants shot at Greece strawberry plantation after not being paid for six months
Greek police are hunting three strawberry plantation foremen, who are suspected of shooting nearly 30 workers, mostly Bangladeshi, after immigrants demanded wages they had not been paid for six months.

Greek police are hunting three strawberry plantation foremen, who are suspected of shooting nearly 30 workers, mostly Bangladeshi, after immigrants demanded wages they had not been paid for six months.

Officials have promised “swift and exemplary” punishment for the three foremen who disappeared after the incident that took place on April, 17 in Nea Manolada, about 260km (160 miles) west of Athens.

So far police arrested the owner of the farm, in the rural south of the country and a local man on suspicion of hiding the three foremen.

The violence allegedly occurred when one of the supervisors opened fire on a crowd of about 200 foreign workers gathered to request their unpaid salaries.

According to one of the immigrants, they were promised wages of 22 euros ($28.70) a day.

"They keep telling us that we will get paid in a month, and this has been going on for more than a year," Reuters quoted a man who refused to be identified.

The conflict resulted in at least 28 people being injured. Seven Bangladeshi workers are still receiving treatment in local hospitals, but none of them has life-threatening injuries.

The Greek government has condemned the “inhuman, unprecedented and shameful” shooting.

"This unprecedented and shameful act is foreign to Greek ethics," government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

At the same time, the country’s main labor union, GSEE, has accused the government of failing to properly investigate conditions at Manolada.

“The criminal act in Manolada ... shows the tragic results of labor exploitation, combined with a lack of control” [by the government labor inspectorate]", a GSEE statement said. “In Manolada, and particularly in the strawberry plantations, a sort of state within a state has been created.”

Wednesday’s attack has been called the worst of all recent attacks on migrant strawberry workers in Greece, the country that mostly Asian and African asylum seekers see as a gateway to the European Union.

The Greek department of the Doctors of the World medical aid group suggested the shooting should be treated as a case of racist violence, a felony which carries more severe penalties.

“The protracted financial crisis, combined with a constantly growing mood of xenophobia and tolerance for racist violence, is leading to incidents of barbarity and brutality that ... insult Greece,” the group said.

Following the violence, local supermarkets, Vasilopoulos and Chalkiadakis, announced that they would stop selling strawberries from the company that employed the alleged shooters.

Activists are now calling for a boycott of what they call slavery, by not buying Manolada berries.

“By boycotting #Manolada's #bloodstrawberries you're sending a clear message that you do not condone slavery,” reads the statement on Twitter.

However, there are some who believe that illegally hired immigrant workers should be deported from crisis stricken Greece.

With unemployment hitting a record 27 percent, anti-immigrant sentiment has been rising in the country.

Right-wing extremist political party, Golden Dawn, which holds 18 seats of the 300-member Parliament, said in a statement Thursday that they “condemn those who illegally employ illegal immigrants, taking the bread away from thousands of Greek families.”

“All illegal immigrants must be immediately deported,” it said.

However, the Party did condemn the shooting as well.

The migrants workers, mainly from Bangladesh were shot at on the farm located in a Peloponnesian village in southern Greece.
The incident began on Wednesday 17th April 2013 according to Greek news reports when hundreds of foreign workers met the three Greeks foremen demanding to be be paid for their work they had completed. Eyewitness reports say that the three foremen “took up arms.” and began shooting indiscriminately at the workers who where were running in panic for their lives to escape the shooting as many where shot in the back and legs.

Twenty migrants workers were taken to regional hospitals, seven workers remain hospitalized, one in a critical condition in hospital-Pyrgos and Patras. In particular, the hospital tower hospitalized four people, one of whom is in critical but stable condition. The University Hospital of Patras hospitalized three immigrant workers who are slightly injured and remain in hospital as a precaution.

Arrest warrants where issued for a 21 year old male, a 39-year old and a 27 year old responsible for the shootings.
The BBC’s reporter Mark Lowen said,
”Around 200 workers had gathered to request their unpaid salaries when at least one farm supervisor opened fire, reports the Police Captain Haralambos Sfetsos. The Council of Europe – the main European human rights watchdog – issued a report this week detailing abuse against migrants in Greece. The report warned of a growing wave of racist violence, stating that “democracy is at risk”.
Shortly after the incident a 57 year old business man, believed to be the owner of the strawberry farm and employer of the three foremen was arrested. Thursday morning (18/04/12) a 38 year old was arrested in a village in the municipality Pineias for harboring two of the three Greeks wanted. According to Greek police, the 38 year old hosted Wednesday evening for a few hours two of the foremen wanted in connection with the shooting.
Allegations against one of the 3 foremen arrested for the shootings say he is known for his action . According to Greek media, the authorities said this is the same actor who a year ago in 2012 was accused of tying and dragging an Egyptian man with his car in the main street of New Manolada,
Greek Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said:
“The inhuman attack in Manolada, is condemned in the most absolute manner by the whole of Greek society. The unprecedented and shameful this action is foreign to the manners of the Greeks and their treatment by the competent authorities will be swift and exemplary”
The Minister of Public Order, Nikos Dendias made this comment after the shootings
“What happened here not only contrary to the legality, but runs directly counter to the idea of humanity. It is totally unacceptable and has no relationship with the wider culture of the Greek people and the Greek society. In Greek democracy today can not be accepted in the economic exploitation of hundreds or thousands of our fellow human beings, like living in unacceptable conditions. Let alone the assassination attempt. In this direction we have the active support of the overwhelming majority of law-abiding citizens of Elis and local people. I feel the need to reiterate that the observation of the law is not only mandatory obligation of all of us, but also a necessary condition for economic recovery of our country, “
Today 19/04/13 a 21 year old male, a 39-year old and a 27 year old responsible for the shootings have now been arrested and questioned by Greek Police for ATTEMPTED MURDER.

28 people are gunned down in Greece by FOPOGGIANS
Does not make headlining news. A Boston marathon suffers casualties. Breaking news.

Interesting how the west condones the actions of Greece , by not making this disgusting act public.

I'm surprised Golden Dawn condemns this. Of course the Boston marathon made headline news...an American tragedy has always been more important than one in the Balkans. I remember in 2001 when Albanian Guerrillas attacked Macedonia there was not a single news article to be seen here in the States.
