Its encouraging to see figures such as Iyad bin Amin Madani identify there is a cancer in the 1.4 billion he represents and needs to be eliminated. People say the funniest things.

In 1857 Phillip Gosse wrote Omphalos which means "belly button" in Greek. This was at the time when geologists were saying the earth is very old. He believed that God created the earth to look old. It would have the appearance of age. Adam would have been created as an adult with a belly button. Adult trees would have tree rings.

Some believe that God created all these fossil bones of animals that never really lived in order to test our faith in God. Some believe that scientists are putting these fossil bones together wrong and create monster dinosaurs that never really existed. Others say that Satan created these fossils in order to deceive us.

France promises merciless retribution as world lights up in solidarity

Battered, bloodied but defiant, France wakes up today with a thirst for "merciless" retribution against the perpetrators of the bloodiest atrocity in the city’s streets since the Second World War.

The wave of six simultaneous attacks that claimed at least 129 lives in Paris overnight are another sickening chapter in what has been a year of terror in France.

January 10, 2015: French President Francois Hollande has addressed the media after the hostage drama that developed overnight.
So close to the country's heart did the perpetrators strike that President Francois Hollande was evacuated from the Stade de France, outside of which assailants detonated explosives. In a testament to the French spirit, the crowd left singing the national anthem at the tops of their lungs.

It was in that same spirit that a clearly shaken Mr Hollande, addressing the media just a short time later, promised his people that France's reaction to the attacks would be swift and merciless.

French President Francois Hollande has closed the nation's borders and declared a state of emergency after a terrorists' killing spree left the nation, and the world, reeling.
The following is a timeline of the horrific events in the nation's capital on Black Friday.

"This is a terrible ordeal which once again assails us. We know where it comes from, who these criminals are, who these terrorists are," Mr Hollande told the media, announcing a state of lockdown including a curfew and the closure of France's borders.

"What the terrorists want is to scare us and fill us with dread. There is indeed reason to be afraid. There is dread, but in the face of this dread, there is a nation that knows how to defend itself, that knows how to mobilise its forces and, once again, will defeat the terrorists.

"France will stand firm. We are going to fight and our fight will be merciless."

French authorities have since announced that the perpetrators behind all six attacks have been killed, but not before exacting a bloody toll that is the worst France has seen since the Second World War.

The worst casualties were recorded at the Bataclan concert hall, where US rock and roll band the Eagles of Death Metal were performing; gunmen entered a bar area in the venue's foyer and mowed concertgoers down with Kalashnikov assault rifles before storming the hall proper and holding the crowd hostage.

Witnesses said the attackers shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is great") and blamed France's military intervention in Syria as they sprayed bullets into the crowd.

"There was blood everywhere, corpses everywhere. We heard screaming. Everyone was trying to flee," said Pierre Janaszak, a radio presenter who attended the concert and hid with several others at the venue.

November 14, 2015: YouTube user hguessh captured the aftermath of a shooting attack on a restaurant in Paris.
"They had 20 hostages, and we could hear them talking with them."

Marc Coupris who was standing at the far side of the hall when the shooting began told the Guardian the scenes before him "looked like a battlefield".

"There were bodies everywhere. There seemed to be at least two gunmen. They shot from the balcony," he said.

Another witness, Europe 1 journalist Julien Pearce recalls how the gunmen, who witnesses have described as being in their 20s, opened fire at "very young" people.

"Three men with Kalashnikovs and wearing flak jackets burst in in the middle of the concert," a separate witness, a man named Hervé, told the Telegraph.

"They just started spraying bullets. I saw a girl hit right in front of me. There must have been quite a few dead."

Across town a man armed with an AK47 stormed popular Parisian restaurant Le Petit Cambodge, ordering diners to the ground before opening fire and killing them one by one; at least 11 perished in that attack.

At a nearby bar, Le Carillon Restaurants, patrons were selected at random and killed, leaving bodies strewn across the street – 14 have been reported slain there, while another 12 were critically injured.

British man Ben Grant described the carnage inside the restaurant.

November 14, 2015: Soccer fans have shared a touching moment in Paris singing ‘La Marseillaise’ as they walk together.
"There are lots of dead people," he told the BBC.

"It's pretty horrific to be honest. I was at the back of the bar.

"I heard gunshots. People dropped to the ground. We put a table over our heads to protect us.

"We were held up in the bar because there was a pile of bodies in front of us."

Other attacks occurred at Cafe La Belle Equipe in central Paris, while a busy shopping centre was also targeted.

The world has pulled together in support of France, which has been rocked by similar attacks in the past few months, most recently when a gunman tried to seize control of a train only to be subdued by a pair of heroic American servicemen.

Before that were the bloody Charlie Hebdo attacks, in which Islamic extremists stormed the offices of the irreverent publication, slaughtering 11 and wounding 11 more.

One World Trade Centre, as well as the Sydney Opera House, Brazil's Christ the Redeemer statue, and London's Wembley Stadium, among many iconic buildings around the globe, have been lit up in the colours of the French flag in solidarity.

One of the attackers behind a deadly mass shooting inside a Paris concert hall is believed to have travelled with refugees through the Greek Islands from Syria.

Tap the play button above to watch Weekend TODAY's LIVE coverage.

Police have also raided homes in the Belgian capital of Brussels, arresting three men in connection with the horrific shootings.

November 14, 2015: Terrified concert-goers were filmed hanging from windows as they desperately tried to escape gunfire inside the Bataclan concert hall.
The official death toll now stands at 129, with more than 350 more injured. Paris prosecutors say seven attackers were involved in the operation, all of whom were killed.

            Latest updates:

November 14, 2015: Paris is in mourning and shock after the city was struck by a horrific act of terrorism with six co-ordinated attacks.
            • ISIL has claimed the attack in an online statement, saying the targets “were carefully chosen”.

It said "eight brothers wearing explosive belts and carrying assault rifles" conducted a "blessed attack on ... Crusader France".

France is part of a US-led coalition conducting airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.

November 14, 2015: Tiffany Wertheimer is live from the Bataclan Theatre in Paris where terrorists attacked the crowd during a concert.
            • A Syrian passport found by police at the scene of the mass shooting inside the Bataclan belonged to an asylum seeker who registered on a Greek island in October, a Greek minister says.

"We confirm that the Syrian passport holder came through the Greek island of Leros on October 3 where he was registered under EU rules," a statement issued by Nikos Toskas, the minister for citizen protection, said.

French police said the document was found "near the body of one of the attackers" in the investigation into the main attack of Friday's carnage, at the Bataclan concert hall, where 82 people were killed.

            • Belgian police have raided a neighbourhood in the capital Brussels and arrested several people in connection with the Paris attacks.

At least three homes were raided in the suburb of Molenbeek, with up to three people arrested, Belgian TV network RTL reports.

The raids were conducted to "find items in the accommodation of three young people who participated in the attacks in Paris", the network said.

            • Hobart woman Emma Parkinson was among those injured, her family telling 9NEWS the 19-year-old was at the Bataclan theatre when four gunman shot and killed at least 78 people.

It is believed she is recovering in a Paris hospital, however her condition is unknown.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop had earlier confirmed at least one Australian had been injured in the co-ordinated attacks in Paris.

"I am aware of an Australian who has been injured in the Paris attacks and we are providing consular assistance," she said in a statement.

Melbourne woman Sophie Doran, 30, was more fortunate, playing dead under a seat at the theatre while her friend nursed a bullet wound, police eventually rescuing them.

            • French President Francois Hollande confirmed Islamic State was behind the attacks, calling them an "act of war".

Mr Hollande said the attacks had been planned and organised from abroad, with help from people inside France, and France "will be merciless toward the barbarians of Islamic State group" and vowed to strike back.

He said the nation would observe three days of mourning and put the nation's security at its highest level.

Seven 'terrorists' dead in Paris attacks
              AFP AFP
              FTBA
Seven "terrorists" were killed in attacks that caused the deaths of at least 129 people in Paris and a Syrian passport was found near one of the assailants, the French capital's prosecutor says.

Prosecutor Francois Molins on Saturday said the attackers had worked in three teams, striking seven times in quick succession on Friday night.

"A Syrian passport in the name of a person born in Syria in September 1990 was found near a suicide bomber who blew himself up at the Stade de France (stadium)," Molins told a press conference.

A Greek government minister said earlier on Saturday that the name on a Syrian passport found at the site of one of the attacks was that of an asylum seeker who registered on a Greek island in October.

Meanwhile, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said France would pursue its intervention in Syria with the aim of striking Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Valls told TF1 television the government also planned to extend a state of emergency imposed across France after Friday's attacks in and around Paris, giving authorities expanded resources to combat what he called "a very well organised" enemy.

Are we believing the Syrian refugee passport holder identity? Would someone really leave Syria and go through the entire process of European migration, only to kill themselves?

If that was his mission it makes sense. Both suspects came through the island of Leros, soon the rest of their route will be revealed.

Man credits phone with saving his life during Paris suicide bombing

November 14, 2015: A Parisian man is crediting his mobile phone with saving his life after he came under fire during the Paris terror attacks.
                      FTBA
A French man who survived the suicide bomb attacks outside Paris's Stade de France said his head would have been "blown to bits" had his phone not stopped a piece of shrapnel.

The man only identified as Sylvestre was near the arena hosting the international football friendly between France and Germany when the attack occurred on Friday night.

"This is the cell phone that took the hit," he told French TV network iTele as he showed the smartphone with a cracked screen.

"It's what saved me. Otherwise my head would have been blown to bits. I wouldn't wish it on anyone," he said.

Sylvestre said he was crossing the road near the stadium when the blast occurred right in front of him.

"Everything was blown to bits and I felt stuff flying around and I left, I fell and then I got back up," he said.

He suffered injuries to his foot and ribcage but could have been more seriously injured had it not been for his phone.

After the chaos of the attack it was established that three suicide bombers had blown themselves up at two fast food restaurants and a brasserie near the stadium, where French President Francois Hollande was watching the game.

There are reports that a number of people were killed in the three attacks but at this point how many remains unclear.

It is reportedly the first time France has experienced such attacks.

The blasts were audible inside the Stade de France and at one point terrified fans spilled onto the pitch.

President Hollande was evacuated after the second bomb was detonated and in a televised address a short time later vowed merciless retribution against the attacks' perpetrators.

They were scheduled to perform in the City of Lights on Saturday.

But, instead, Bono and his U2 band-mates found themselves at a candlelit vigil in honour of the 129 people murdered in a terrorist rampage.

The Irish group, who also include guitarist The Edge, drummer Larry Mullen Jr and bass player Adam Clayton, joined fellow mourners at the roadside vigil, where they laid bouquets of flowers.

The veteran chart-toppers were visibly moved as they stood on the pavement near the scene of yesterday's Bataclan Theatre terrorist attack.

Each of the musicians placed flowers at the site, which was taped off by police.

At least 120 people have been killed and over 200 injured, 80 of which seriously, following a series of terrorist attacks in the French capital.

The Foo Fighters' announcement succeeded a similar one by Irish rock band U2, who were due to headline the Bercy Arena on Saturday.

The band - who were later seen attending a candlelit memorial in the city centre - announced to their fans it would be postponing the concert until 'an appropriate time.'

'We watched in disbelief and shock at the unfolding events in Paris and our hearts go out to all the victims and their families across the city tonight,' the statement continued.

'We are devastated at the loss of life at the Eagles of Death Metal concert and our thoughts and prayers are with the band and their fans. And we hope and pray that all of our fans in Paris are safe,' they wrote from Paris.

After almost four continuous decades of Middle Eastern turmoil and upheaval largely orchestrated by the USA and supported by her western allies, is it any wonder that these atrocities continue...and that's just the last 30-40 years...let's not even get into the blowback of European colonialism and that fuckin' big elephant in the room.

Once you could confine terrorism to little far flung corners and fiefdoms of the globe, when terrorists operated and recruited in small circles for regional causes.
Today, terrorism has an immediate global reach due largely to the freedom of travel and the ease of transport for the masses, communications and the uptake of social media platforms across the planet has aided recruitment and galvanised wider ideologies...for the first time in human history, anyone, anywhere, is potentially a victim...
