My great-grandfather was born near Lerin in the 1870's. Since the day he could speak he identified as a Macedonian. What did yours speak? What did they identify as? I find it hard to beleive your family spoke greek and nothing but greek. What part of greece are you from?

Oikonomides has to say about the "Greek" language; it was broken and fractured, more easily intelligible to a Turk than anyone else, so much so that it isn't accurate to be calling it "Greek", and certainly completely incomprehensible to what constitutes "Greek" in 2009.

1940 the grandfather of the macedonian premierminister was fighting in 53 brigade, of
greek army, against Italy. A year later hi was killed at Ivan Planina (Ivan mountain), in today
Albania. In the school in Krusoradi today there is a monument with his name, of course translated in Greece - Nikos Grujos.
