The Macedonian national handball team as well as fans are hit at the World Handball Championship in Croatia.
Being drawn in a group with the current world and vice world champion plus Russia, the odds of Macedonia qualifying to the next round were 150:1 according to leading UK bookmaker WilHill. Wouldn't you wish now you placed a $10 bet on Macedonia?
A story on its own. Their true number isn't precise, the Croatian media speculates they are the biggest fan group with around 2,000, of which at least 1,500 attend the matches. Second biggest fan group are the Germans, with about 1,000.
According to Croatian daily Jutarnji List, the number of Macedonian fans may double because now Macedonia is moving from Varazdin to Zadar, a bigger city, much more accessible to fans.
Macedonian fans arrive 'armed' with 30 meter flag, and dozen drums who get pounded for 60 minutes. Croatian residents have started to go to Macedonian matches and cheer for Macedonia, not just because they were drawn by the team, but to see and mingle with the Macedonian fans.
The sea of yellow and red is easily noticeable. This sea will now move to Zadar. Macedonia is no longer worried what it does or doesn't do, they are already in the top 12 handballing nations on the planet. It defeated the vice world champion, and the IHF had to intervene to save the world champion from losing to Macedonia. You already did us proud, now whatever happens, is only extra.
Update
Germany defeated Poland 30-23 in the remaining match of Group C. With this, Macedonia will move into the next round as the 2nd place team from Group C. Surprise in Group D as South Korea defeated Spain 24-23. Spain, one of the favorites for a medal, is now out of it and will fight for the 13 to 24th position.
