Well done Macedonia, great win. It is a shame that we just fell short of qualifying for the final four, but at least we got the win against those Serbs. We are not completely out of it, we have a game against Slovenia for fifth place and a spot in the Olympics.

EuroHandball: Ex Yugoslavia Still Playing Best Handball

Four ex Yugoslav Republics are in the top 6 teams at this European Championship in Handball hosted by Serbia.


Serbia and Croatia are playing the first semifinal match, while Macedonia and Slovenia, another two Republics are playing each other for a qualifying ticket for London 2012 as well as for the 5th position in Europe.


Four out of Six!


Despite lots and lots of money being thrown into TV rights by Germany, France... their citizens will not watch their teams fight it out for the top spots.

The ex Yugoslav Republics just like in the past continue to produce top athletes, and when it comes to handball, the best in Europe.


Meanwhile, Macedonian Fans called "Phalanx" or "Falanga" have become legendary... Without causing incidents both durinig European championship in basketball and now in handball, they by far outnumber any other fans and create an atmosphere that no one can match. As an example, German handball players Kraus and Strobel wished to have a fraction of the atmosphere Macedonian fans create in Germany, even if they lose their matches.


On a different note, the Belgrade Arena speaker asked 10,000 Macedonian fans to stay in the Arena and cheer for Serbia for their upcoming match, as if they were for rent! :-)

When have the serbs supported the Macedonians...?

He might be a srboman moron, or just doing what a Serbian friend and fellow fan was doing, or part Macedonian part Serb, who knows. Although the distinction can get blurry in some cases, I think there is a difference between good Macedonians who are sympathetic towards Serbs in the sense that we share certain periods of our history and should naturally be aligned, and Macedonian srbomani who try hard to 'appear' as Serbs.

We beat Slovenia 28-27 to finish in 5th place, thus booking ourselves in the mini qualification tournament for the Olympics in London. Very good effort, our basketballers finished 4th in Europe and now 5th for our handballers, well done.
