The situation has become more alarming since last night, when a great number of police special forces were dispatched in Gevgelija to prevent further flow of migrants from the Greek side of the border (according to media around 3000 migrants are also waiting in the border zone).
Meanwhile as media report the situation in Gevgelija is close to a humanitarian disaster - migrants bring deseases, polute the town with garbage and even doing their "call of nature" everywhere they feel like it.
Stores are nearly out of bread and cabs are almost nowhere to be seen.

There are many complains, but in general I think Macedonia handles the situation fine for now. They register the refugees at the greek border and give them 72 hours brake, there are humanitarians giving comfort, food, water, medicine, take to hospital if needed,...and so they squeeze themselves like cattle in these pieces of rolling junk called trains and off they go to promised land.

Not a bad idea, but I would also suggest that they go to London, Paris, and Berlin, among other NATO members, for their collective role in producing the conditions for mass migration.

I pity Europe, but Europeans need to learn a lesson, and this is a start.

Macedonia declares state of emergency to tackle migrant crisis

Authorities deploy riot police with tear gas and armoured vehicles as up to 2,000 migrants a day enter border town of Gevgelija

Macedonia has declared a state of emergency in an attempt to stem the flow of migrants over its southern border with Greece, deploying riot police in armoured vehicles and calling out the army.

Authorities said official border crossings remained open, but that they would “reduce illegal border entry to a minimum“.

A Reuters reporter near the border town of Gevgelija said a column of riot police armed with tear gas and armoured vehicles had shut off passage for several thousand people now stranded in no-man’s land. “No more Macedonia,” one officer said in English to a Syrian man requesting passage.

The flow of migrants into Gevgelija, which had hit 1,500 to 2,000 a day, has been stopped. The clampdown came after days of chaotic scenes at the local railway station as thousands of people tried to board trains to Serbia, young children being passed through open carriage windows.

Macedonia acted as a Greek car ferry docked in Athens carrying 2,400 Syrian refugees from the island of Kos, just some of the 50,000 Middle Eastern, African and Asian migrants and refugees who arrived in Greece in July alone. Many will take buses north, heading for Macedonia, then Serbia and Europe’s borderless Schengen zone in Hungary.

“We cannot hermetically close the borders,” interior ministry spokesman Ivo Kotevski told Reuters. But “we will try to reduce illegal border entry to a minimum,” he added.

Kotevski said there was no coordination between Greek and Macedonian police. The two countries have had an uneasy relationship, rooted in a dispute over Macedonia’s name, since it declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, a row that has blocked Skopje’s integration with Nato and the European Union.

Kotevski said a state of emergency had been declared on Macedonia’s northern and southern borders and that soldiers would be brought in to help address a crisis that is straining the capacity of cash-strapped Macedonia and Serbia.

To the north, Hungary is racing to complete a fence along its 108-mile (175km) border with Serbia to keep migrants out, threatening to create a bottleneck of tens of thousands of people.

Macedonia appealed on Wednesday for neighbouring countries to send train carriages to address the demand. But the United Nations refugee agency urged the government to do more, saying it should allocate a site to accommodate the migrants and refugees.

“Depending on how Greece uses ships to de-congest the islands, that will also temporarily increase the arrivals here,” said Alexandra Krause, senior protection officer at the UNHCR in the Macedonian capital, Skopje.

“The [Macedonian] government needs to provide an appropriate site to be able to shelter the arrivals properly and to ensure sufficient assistance,” Krause told Reuters.

The only site currently being used is at the local police station, where Krause said the UNHCR had built a shelter with capacity for only 165 people. Krause said the Red Cross had access to the migrants and refugees in the border area but warned of harsher weather approaching.

Last night one of the migrants injured a police officer with a knife, and this morning the riot police had to use stun grenades against the migrant mob in Gevgelija.
The situation is deteriorating rapidly,I don't know what could happen in the following days...

Top story in most European media yesterday. Masses of illegal immigrants first stopped and teargased at the border, eventually let pass.

I don't think anyone would like to take any refugees as they maynot be able to support them.Apparently talk is as much as 160,000 immigrants have come through Greece looking for a better life ie from Syria.

So I've heard Greece was given MILLIONS of euros to deal with this problem, while Macedonia was given 90 thousand euros yet all the Greeks due is bring them to the Macedonian border and dump them.

Good on Macedonia, I have family on the border and don't want illegal refugees near them. News sites only show the kids and women crying, how about the 95% of men that are there? throwing rocks at police. These people also are apparently refusing to eat and drink in 'protest'

Also I wonder how 100s of thousands of Christian refugees would be welcomes if they were going into the Middle East? Probably not with free food and drinks and open hands.

Instead of defending there homeland from ISIS (some of them are even former ISIS) they run there fucking PUSSIES.

Greece is not dumping them at the borders, they're dumping them at Athens. For once, they thought of dumping them at Thessaloniki, so that they can reach more easily the borders, but of course they eventually didn't do it, because that is illegal and the world is watching.

Being a Greek and following this issue for years, I'm not sure if Greece is unwilling or unable to deal with the problem. The correct and practical thing to do, would be (after a short period of registration, less than a week) sending them back to Turkey. Until recently, Turkey would not accept them back, but 6 or 10 months ago Turkey made an agreement with European Union and is obliged to take them back and do what they want with them.

That would certainly NOT be Tsipras policy.

Don't believe for one minute what Amphipolis says.....
These refugees are the ones from Kos island transported directly to the Macedonian border.
And why aren't they taken to a legal border crossing? Well you come to your own conclusion.

Greece is contravening EU law by shipping refugees from Kos toward the Macedonian border,
But Greece does what Greece wants once again.

There were reports men broke through police lines when it was opened for families, women and children. (Such as those men we see on every news channel who were taken back over the border...the same men that to the camera, try and show non existent injuries and accusing Macedonian police brutality) These men trampled over women and children as they pushed through the border (hence the other scenes of women laying and rolling over on train tracks and children crying alongside them). This launching of stun grenades would have been in attempt to restore order and safety. Unfortunately Some of these grenades landed near women launched by a overzealous panicking police officer during the out of control mayhem.

So we see many negative images and taken out of context......but they fail to show like ones below..... The true Macedonia.

Bullshit amphipolis, they've been dumped at the Macedonian border. Why would they need to travel through Macedonia to travel to EU countries, when they have already reached the EU?

                            Godless actions by you guys.

A prosperous, independent and free Macedonia for Macedonians will be the ultimate revenge to our enemies.

I have family that is literally the last Macedonian village to Greece and have witnessed these migrants first hand when I was there this summer. Greece is dumping them at the border, a few months ago the defence minister of Greece even threatened EU saying if they didnt recieve bailout money they would respond by unleashing migrants to europe including former ISIS this video can easily be found

These people (not exactly refugees) are all of them (from Kos, Lesvos and other islands). Greece gives a priority in registration of Syrians, but I'm not sure these are only or mostly Syrians.

As I already said they are not shipped to Thessaloniki (or the borders) even though they thought doing it for a moment. They are shipped from the islands to Athens and then they reach the borders through various ways (trains, buses, walking).

These people will avoid legal border crossings because they will be more easily stopped there. Also, they will not apply for asylum in Greece or Italy because they will be trapped there. They want to reach wealthier countries (Germany, United Kingdom and Scandinavia).
