Macedonian American to buy Detroit Pistons

Does anybody know how much Mike Ilitch is worth?

    Tuesday, 05 October 2010

The Detroit Pistons have decided to sell the team to Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, a person involved with the process said Tuesday.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of a confidentiality agreement, said both sides were negotiating financial terms.

If the sale goes through, Ilitch would control three of the city’s four major professional sports teams.

Mike Ilitch (born Ilievski) 1929 in Bitola, Macedonia is considered the wealthiest Macedonian in the world. Ilitch, the Little Caesars pizza mogul, said in August he wanted to buy the Pistons in part to make sure another buyer doesn’t move the NBA club out of town. Forbes last year valued the team at $479 million.

Pistons owner Karen Davidson has said she was considering a sale of the team by itself or as part of a package with Palace Sports and Entertainment, which includes The Palace of Auburn Hills, DTE Energy Music Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival.

Her husband, Bill Davidson, died last year. The late owner was in charge when the Pistons won NBA titles in 1989, 1990 and 2004. Karen Davidson has said she expected the deal to be done by this month’s season-opening game.

No, Mike Ilitch is born in Detroit, Michigan. He is a first generation American of Macedonian descent. His parents were born in Bitola. Anyone can edit wikipedia and yesterday his page said he was born in Bitola but that's wrong.

This is what Little Caesar's website says about the Illtch family:

Mike and Marian Ilitch are both first-generation Americans of Macedonian descent.

Through the franchising of the Little Caesars Pizza concept, they have provided thousands of people with the opportunity to become independent business owners.

Since 1959, they have provided employment through the Little Caesars chain to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.

Little Caesars restaurants are located in cities and towns across the country providing stable businesses and jobs in the community.

It is Mike and Marian's philosophy to give back to the community that supports them. The chain's franchise owners share this philosophy.

The couple has seven children whom they have raised with the values they both share - humility and community generosity.

The Ilitch family has received many awards applauding its contributions to the community and to the restaurant industry.

Mike and Marian Ilitch and their family have donated millions of dollars to charitable organizations, provided amateur sports sponsorships for hundreds of thousands of children, and devoted thousands of hours of their time to charitable and community organizations.

They became pioneers in the redevelopment of downtown Detroit in 1987 when they purchased the Fox Theatre building, renovated the theatre and offices, and relocated their Little Caesars world headquarters to downtown Detroit.

The Ilitch family are great Americans of Macedonian descent! UMD attended the 50th Anniversary of Little Ceasars Pizza last May at the Fox Theater in Detroit and met the entire family.

He didnt change his surname, it was forced upon him during the first yugoslavia when our good friends the serbs enforced a serbonization policy towards the macedonian people.

Why doesnt he change it back? I guess its the same reason as to why the aegean macedonians and macedonians from albania dont change their "greek" or "albanian" surnames

Thats maybe the first family from Bitola which i have heard that they were forced to change their name.

Does anyone else know of someone from Bitola who was forced to change their name?

Didn't serbia force every Macedonian surname to be changed into ic? they changed our surname into Ristovic.

yes, names were serbo=nised, when the old man was born he had a suffix "slav" without giving his christian name away, imagine Michael, becamemichaelslav. / And "ich" was the norm instead of "ski" for the surnames, birth registrations with the council were serbanised names. I was shocked when I found out my dedo had to do this, so much for Tito having a free Macedonia. If this did not occur, people were without work and ostracised.
The shackles of titoism and free Macedonia, was a farce.
