This is according to figures from Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, which suggest the airline industry is continuing to improve despite the effects of industrial action in France and Germany.

Group one airports, or those accommodating more than 25 million passengers a year, reported an average increase of 2.3 percent, while group two airports, which handle between five and ten million people annually, experienced an average rise of 3.9 percent.

The largest increase, however, was recorded among group four airports, or those welcoming five million passengers or less a year. Compared with February last year, airports reported an average rise in passenger numbers of 5.7 percent.

Ohrid in Macedonia was the best-performing group four airport after it experienced a passenger numbers increase of 70.6 percent, while Istanbul came out on top in group one after it recorded a rise of 16 per cent.

Meanwhile, the ACI Europe Airport Awards will be taking place June 17th and will assess a number of disciplines including facilities, environmental awareness and customer service.
