Macedonia Harshens Tone Towards EU And US Critics

Diplomats, journalists, businessmen and mayors close to Macedonia’s ruling party have begun using increasingly inflammatory language in verbal duels with EU and US representatives.

Vladimir Taleski, mayor of Bitola, the second largest town, set a new bar last week by comparing EU critics of Macedonia with Yugoslavia’s Nazi invaders in the Second World War.

In a speech marking the anniversary of the deportation of Macedonian Jews to Nazi death camps, the mayor, a member of the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party, likened EU policy towards Macedonia to the Holocaust.

Diplomat Risto Nikovski last week controversially called for US ambassador Philip Reeker to be expelled.

He said the diplomat had overstepped the mark by proposing that Macedonia should make concessions in its ongoing dispute with Greece over its name.

As a result of the ensuing row, he was obliged to resign from his post as foreign policy advisor to the Macedonian President, Gjorge Ivanov.

Meanwhile, a joint letter signed by four high-profile journalists and sent to 50 official EU addresses attacked the former EU ambassador to Macedonia, Erwan Fouere, the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Macedonia, Zoran Thaler, and the Dutch ambassador, Simone Filippini.

Earlier, in December, a ruling party deputy accused former ambassador Fouere of being politically biased against the government of Nikola Gruevski and of favouring the opposition Social Democrats. Vlatko Gjorcev defended his standpoint on the grounds of freedom of expression.

Political analyst Kim Mehmeti said the series of outbursts were intended to emphasis the Gruevski government’s determination now to be cowed by the EU, the US, or by neighbouring Greece .

Mehmeti noted that Gruevski had adopted a increasingly hard line since 2008, when Greece vetoed a NATO membership invitation to Macedonia over the unresolved name dispute. Greece says that use of the name “Macedonia” implies a territorial pretension to the Greek northern province of Macedonia.

Jovan Donev, on the other hand, head of the Skopje-based Euro Balkan institute, defended the remarks, arguing that everyone had right to state his or her opinion.

“Official standpoints [on the EU, Greece, etc] come from the President and Prime Minister and are very clear,” he said. Gruevski’s government is officially committed to EU and NATO integration.
So we (in fact) now have proof that anyone opposing concessions in Macedonia's ongoing dispute with Greece over its name is not employable by the ruling government. DrPajMeNE are an enemy of Macedonia.

Where are the Gruevski/Ivanov supporters now, to defend this latest example of treachery? I am not sure of what their sentiments have been in the past, but good on Taleski and Nikolovski for telling it how it is, or better yet, how it should be.

I'm not sure what Nikovski's comments were, or even Reeker's that Nikovski was responding to, but to be forced to resign because you are doing your job (protecting the national sovereignty of your people) is the idiotic state of affairs in Macedonia and should not come as any surprise. Our vassal politicians see their interests (personal) quite clearly and Nikovski's comments obviously did not align to their view that Macedonia should remain a vassal/puppet state in a vain pursual of their personal career ambitions.

What an absolute farce and disgrace on the good name of Risto Nikovski, having to resign for putting Reeker in his place and standing up for the sovreignity of Macedonia. Where's the Prime Minister to defend him? or at the very least support his right to an opinion! What the f... is Ivanov doing about this.....defending his policy advisor? obviously not....shit these pricks have the wrong jobs, throw Ivanov out and appoint Nikovski- simple! Gruevski may as well get a job at the EU since he prefers them to the foreign policy advisor of Macedonia! What a joke, finally someone has the balls to tell it like it is and they lose their job - what are they thinking there in RoM?

This shows the supporters of Ivanov and Gruevski for what they really are standing up for - EU, NATO and yankee doodle.
Anyone that continues to support them and/or policies is in the same sphere as they are

I would say they are using Nikovski dismissal as a scapegoat and deterrent just in case any Macedonians in Macedonia get any ideas on pulling their shackles and chains off and revolting

Well done to Risto Nikovski and Vladimir Taleski for standing up to the decay and corruption of the macedonian people and republic. Its always great reading about macedonians from the republic who are brave and switched on.

But alas, gruevski and Ivanov continue to show that they dont work for macedonian interests but for Grk, EU and NATO interests.

If there is any justice in this world traitorous scumbags like Gruevski and Ivanov would be Lynched and hanged by the people and brave people like Vladimir Taleski and Risto Nikovski would be leading the country

President Ivanov urges Macedonians in Albania to Unite

                          Friday, 18 March 2011

President Gjorge Ivanov called on Macedonians in Albania and the leadership of their only political party - Macedonian Alliance for European Integration (MAEI) - to unite in order to be able to ensure their minority rights and to improve their living standards in Albania, where local polls are going to be held in May and a census of the population in November.

Representatives from Mala Prespa, Golo Brdo and Gora - mostly populated by a Macedonian minority in all of Albania - met with President Ivanov to discuss their problems, voicing satisfaction that their issues had been discussed at the highest level for the first time, MIA reports.

"The visit of the Macedonian president for us is crucial and the fact that talks were held with the premier and president of Albania to discuss openly about the problems of Albanian Macedonians, who are recognised only in Mala Prespa, Pustec municipality. Those outside of this municipality are not registered as Macedonians and thus do not enjoy any right. Hopefully, these bilateral meetings will finally solve the issue and Macedonians from Golo Brdo and Gora will be recognised as Macedonians by official authorities in Albania, stated Edmond Temelko - MAEI president and Pustec mayor.

Vasil Sterjovski - director of TV Kristal from Korca - said the President urged Macedonians in Albania to be united over their party, as a way to obtain their rights.

"Solely by engaging in Albania's politics, we will manage to integrate in local institutions and by securing posts in the local authority and MP seats, we'll have the chance to raise issues at economic and national plan," Sterjovski said.

He commended that Albanian President Bamri Topi for the first time discussed the minority issue.

"It is considered as an encouragement for all minorities. Topi has condemned hard-line nationalists who refuse to have a census with an ethnic section in the form, not only for Macedonians, but also for other minorities, being scared Albania to become a multi-ethnic state," stated Sterjovski.

Talks also focused on the issue involving the Xhepciste - Trebista border crossing near Golo Brdo and the construction of a road, thus solving infrastructure shortcomings.

Road infrastructure was also discussed at yesterday's talks between Ivanov and Albania's top officials, because it is vital for free flow of people, goods and services and for promotion of Macedonian products on the Albanian market. Trade exchange with Albania is the lowest compared to other neighbouring countries, standing only at 86 million dollars.

Macedonians in Albania also welcomed the initiative of turning the Macedonian language lectorate into a department within the Tirana university. The lectorate was established 15 years ago and currently 73 students study Macedonian as a selective subject.

President Ivanov, after meeting with Tirana mayor Edi Rama, wrapped up his two-day visit to Albania.

Ivanov can ask the Albanian President if they will ever be stupid enough to create an Ohrid Agreement for their minorities.

Ivanov should also wary about the Macedonians rights in the Republic.

Maybe if Macedonians demanded rights throughout the balkans they might get somewhere.
