Warsaw NATO summit could invite Macedonia and Montenegro - Polish MoD
03.09. Warsaw (PAP) - Poland would want the next year's NATO summit to invite Macedonia and Montenegro to join the Alliance, Poland's deputy PM and Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said after meeting Defence Minister of Macedonia Zoran Jolevski.
During the Wednesday talks the two ministers also discussed the issue of refugees and prospects for the delivery and modernisation of military equipment.
"The main political topic was the question of an invitation for Macedonia and Montenegro to join NATO," said Siemoniak adding that Poland "would want such invitation to be worded (...)" during the Warsaw summit.
"We believe that Poland, as a beneficiary of an open door policy 16 years ago, has a moral obligation to support further expansion of NATO, especially when it comes to the Balkan states, as we see in this an element stabilising the situation in southern Europe," Siemoniak told PAP.
Siemoniak stressed that Macedonia "is a very active and reliable partner of NATO." It offers logistic support to KFOR operations in Kosovo and takes part in the Alliance's operations, among others in Afghanistan.
The Polish minister stressed that the refugee situation is also a very important problem noting that thousands of migrants cross the Macedonian borders each day. Siemoniak said he briefed his counterpart on the Friday meeting of PMs of the Visegrad Group of states in Prague who will work on proposals of regulations aimed at bringing the situation under control.
Referring to the recent intensification of Polish-Macedonian contacts Minister Siemoniak said there are several reasons behind this process, one of them being Macedonia's interest in closer military cooperation with Poland.
"We talked about our offer in terms of equipment and armament...Macedonians are interested in acquiring (our) APC Rosomak, we also discussed possible overhauls of Russian-made helicopters," the minister added.
Siemoniak said the two also discussed security policy, threats around Europe, the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and the Islamic State.
"We are trying, also in view of next year's NATO summit in Warsaw, to be more active in Balkan politics," noted Siemoniak. He recalled his and Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna's visits to Montenegro, as well as his visit to Bulgaria past Friday.
"It is an expression of interest in this part of Europe, important for the stability not only of the region. This is definitely one of the regions of geopolitical rivalry. I believe that Poland, seen as a very important country, a NATO and EU member, has a big role to play here." (PAP)
