Excellent news AMHRC/MHRMI, your selfless efforts never go unnoticed. So long as you retain your integrity as you have done up until now, you will always have our support on such matters of national importance. Keep up the great work.

    The below is particularly encouraging:
However the year garnered even more support from Macedonians and democratically minded Greeks. Large numbers of people have participated in the process of producing the newspaper, via meetings, providing advice, distributing the newspaper, offering voluntary aid and contributing to its content.

The year was also full with words of encouragement to continue our mission. There has also been a large and hopeful presence of the youth – a shining beacon for the future. One year where some light has shone in the general darkness of various issues (political, historical, cultural, human rights etc).

      Thanks SoM,

We really appreciate the support given to us by MTO and we don't take it for granted.

Also it is encouraging to see younger Macedonians in Egej becoming involved with Nova Zora. In the next issue of our Review, this will be highlighted in an article about a very successful Macedonian dinner dance that Nova Zora recently staged in Lerinsko.

      Pozdrav,

      AMHRC.

Good stuff, and looking forward to it.

Just a question - what do you think is the main reason for younger Macedonians in Egej becoming more involved in their own Macedonian community? Does it have more to do with exposure, are they finally shaking off the fear harboured by previous generations, or a combination of both? Can we gauge the perception of at least those young Macedonians towards the Macedonian republic just north of that artificial border?

Good questions SoM and it's difficult to answer them - people in the Nova Zora team will need eventually to try to do some research on this.

Definitely the regular monthly publication and distribution (the paper is distributed widely throughout Aegean Macedonia and this involves quite an effort and plenty of team work) of the newspaper has given the younger Macedonians involved, something concretely productive to work on. It has given them the feeling of being part of something important on a wide social scale.

However, it will be difficult to see what the full social impact of Nova Zora is, for some time - the hope of course is that it will lead to an organic and durable Macedonian cultural renaissance.

As for the Macedonian republic, for those openly involved with Nova Zora and Vinozhito, it is universally viewed as the place where one can find a way to rejuvinate one's Macedonian cultural roots. For example, even though there are a number of Macedonian groups that are conducting Macedonian language classes in Egej (especially in Solun), what is not often mentioned is that numerous (if we gave a figure, it would be pure speculation, though we do anecdotally know that whatever the number is, it is not an insignificant one) Egejtsi make the effort to enrol themselves in Macedonian night or weekend language classes in the Macedonian republic. We are also aware that this is in part a spin off positive affect derived from the basic Macedonian language course that is provided in each month's issue of Nova Zora.

Time will tell, but so will resources. So I will take this opportunity to remind the readers of MTO, that projects like Nova Zora can only exist if there is adequate finance and for those readers interested in making a practical difference on the ground, both the AMHRC and MHRMI are only an email away.

          Regards,

          AMHRC.

Congrats, you truly work in the best interests of most Macedonians in Diaspora communities. As, time passes we see more and more that groups like the MPO and UMD have very similar personal agenda's - please the Government of the United States at the cost of Macedonians. One, has been dead many years and the other is going in that same direction.

To both the AMHRC and MHRMI, your efforts are appreciated so much! Congratulating Nova Zora, and to all who contribute, this is a wonderful achievement for our people, and its heartening to see the future - the younger generation , losing the shackles and being involved, a catalyst for change, congratulations to you all, well done !!

I know one reason among others: the downfall of the Greek economy. The fact that there is no justice towards those who committed wrongs, cuts in salaries and pensions, combined with the lack of opportunities for the younger generation, especially in rural areas, all this has led to a "rebellious" kind of attitude from Greek citizens, both young and old. The European "dream" is over. People are looking towards alternatives. Expressing your Macedonian culture and identity is just one way of showing your anger towards the Greek state.

Greece denies the mere existence of the ethnicity of Macedonians, so it's clear that they would avoid to put it as a language in that University, just a few kilometres from the Macedonian border.
Actually it includes: (1) Albanian, (2) Serbian, (3) Bulgarian, (4) Turkish, (5) Romanian and (6) Russian
Students have to learn ALL these 6 languages, also English and French!
The University of Western Macedonia is located in 2 cities (Kozani and Florina).
The University of Macedonia (located in Thessaloniki) also has a School of Balkan, Slavic and Eastern Studies. This School teaches 2 languages (Turkish and Russian) and doesn't emphasize in linguistics as it seems.

So in Greece (occupied Macedonia) you have the University of Macedonia which doesn't even have Macedonian language classes or lessons or curricular, is this correct?

Don't be a fool. Macedonian wasn't left out because it couldn't be accomodated for space, the racist policies of successive Greek governments have never allowed the Macedonian language in Greece any recognition, aside from that facade they put on during the 1920's with the Abecedar primer, which, in any case, was never distributed to the people of Macedonia and Thrace who spoke the language.

Do not come here with the purpose of trying to falsely demonstrate examples of neutrality from the Greek state towards the Macedonians. There are none.

One would think that in a university of macedonia one would learn macedonian. Not in the greek one you don't.You learn falsely how a university of macedonia really teaches that the language is not macedonian but greek. Is'n t it amazing to deny logic & reality & replace it with stupidity & moronic behaviour. It's all a charade the greek government has been denying the existence of macedonians. It has called them slavophones, bulgarophones.they have not allowed to express their basic rights in their mother tounge let alone a university degree in macedonian. Why because if they do that that will demonstrate to the world that the greeks have no basis to be in the agean area. They have really concocted propaganda of denial & paranoia & huge coverup to avoid mentioning the existence of macedonians in the agean area.In other words they have to give back the land they took illegally in 1913.
