Coca Cola recipe 'discovered'

The ingredients of the drink, created by John Pemberton, a medicinal pharmacist in 1886, have always been a mystery.

However, Thisamericanlife.org claims to have discovered a list in a photograph in a newspaper article giving the ingredients and exact quantities to make the drink.

The Feb 8 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a photo of someone holding open a book with a recipe claimed to be an exact replica of Pemberton's.

The recipe reportedly contains the exact measures of all the different oils needed for Coca Cola's secret ingredient, Merchandise 7X.

Despite making up only one per cent of the drink's total formula, Merchandise 7X is thought to give the popular soft drink its unique taste.

The official recipe is said to be guarded 24-hours a day in a vault in Atlanta, Georgia.


The 'secret recipe'

Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP

Citric acid 3 oz

Caffeine 1oz

Sugar 30 (it is unclear from the markings what quantity is required)

Water 2.5 gal

Lime juice 2 pints 1 qrt

Vanilla 1oz

Caramel 1.5oz or more to colour

7X flavour (use 2oz of flavour to 5 gals syrup):

Alcohol 8oz

Orange oil 20 drops

Lemon oil 30 drops

Nutmeg oil 10 drops

Coriander 5 drops

Neroli 10 drops

Cinnamon 10 drops

I listened to This American Life on my ipod. It is a great radio show. I was amazed that they found the "Recipe" but disappointed when the got the Jones Soda Company to recreate it and it turned out to taste like Royal Crown Cola.

One part of the show that I thought was very interesting was that one of the original formulas did include cocaine, but the combination of cocaine and caffeine has a bitter taste so they changed it.

Here is for an interesting fact the Germans after WW2 tried to create the Cola recipe but failed instead Fanta was born

For the young ones Fanta was a orange flavoured drink popular in the 70's

Coca cola originally was a tonic drink and it did contain a small amount of cocaine of course this change later. Having cocaine caffeine and sugar it would give you a mild pick me up feeling.

The topic was the FORMULA ie INGREDIENTS of Coca Cola.

A preceding post…ie Post003 said that they had heard the original formula…there’s that word….contained cocaine and caffeine.

I concurred that the original formula did have cocaine and caffeine and added from my knowledge of coca cola that it was originally a tonic drink…ie a pick me up health drink and Not tonic as in tonic water the mixer which contain quinine you dumb bastard….and that for legal reasons the cocaine was removed later from the ingredients…see there’s that other word.

In the same previous post the writer said that he had heard on a usa radio program the now outed formula had been prepared by a soda company for a trial and found that it supposedly tasted like Royal Cola…which was sold in Australia in the 70s and early 80s and disappeared from sale along with Tab cola…so I commented geee I haven’t seen Royal cola in a long time…ie in Australia…and is it still around in the usa.
