The Macedonians originates it, the Bulgarians imitate it and the Greeks exploit it!

Finished strong pulling away at the end which will help if he doesn't try to circle the entire field again.

Thats his pattern comes from behind usually trying to circle the whole field. Nice win the other day from near last weaved his way through lost momentum a couple of times won well. 3200m tomorrow bred to stay, if he can get a cart to the 500m HOME

                  Mon Oct 24 2011

Premier trainer Peter Moody says Macedonian will be competitive in the Melbourne Cup if he forces his way into the race with a win in the Lexus Stakes at Flemington.

The six-year-old, who finished eighth in the Caulfield Cup, is 37th in order of Melbourne Cup entry, 13 outside the field of limit of 24 but if he can win Saturday's 2500-metre Group Three event he will be exempt from the ballot.

"I am really pleased with him and I think the bigger track at Flemington is going to suit him super, as well as the 2500 metres," Moody said.

"He struggled on the turns all the way at Caulfield the other day but his closing sectionals were as good as anything in the race."

Moody said Macedonian was a better horse than a year ago when he finished fifth in the Geelong Cup before winning the Lavazza Long Black (2800m) on Melbourne Cup Day on his way to Sandown Cup success.

He hasn't won since but has been sparingly raced with highlights including a third in the Adelaide Cup (3200m) in March and fifth in the Sydney Cup (3200m) in April.

Macedonian has only 50.5kg in the Melbourne Cup.

He's had five conditioning runs this campaign and finished seventh in Herbert Power Stakes and was beaten only 4-1/2 lengths in the Caulfield Cup after making a run from last.

"He's definitely more mature now and he's at the top of his game," Moody said.

"I am looking forward to Saturday and would dearly love to get him into the Cup field."

The last two Lexus winners were 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and Maluckyday, who finished second to Americain last year.

The Lexus has attracted 28 entries and 24 of them are among the 47 horses that were paid up for the Cup as second acceptors on Monday.

Caulfield Cup third placegetter Tullamore (25th in order of Cup entry), The Verminator (26th), Herbert Power Stakes placegetter Moyenne Corniche (27th) and stablemate and Saptapadi (28th) are all entered for the Lexus and are borderline to make the Melbourne Cup field.

If the greeks had naming rights they would name him the horse with no name. But more advertizing with the macedonian name.

The Macedonian government would probably name him the "saddle on a horse", and badge him with the acronym "SOAH".

I think the Macedonian govt. would possibly even call it "jockey on a sadlle on a horse" or FYROMJOASOAH!

Yeah I go TAB quite a bit and right now I wouldn't put any bets on this horse at the moment. Just wait for the next couple of days I'll have a look at the line up and the performance of the horses going for the cup. The Melbourne cup is probably the stupidest and most unpredictable race ever. I would never put big money on this race and I suggest others don't either. It's a 3200m race where anything can happen it's the longest race here.

Any background info why the horse was named Macedonian?

Never heard anything as to why it was named that but since Melbourne has such a large Macedonian community maybe the owner called it that. Or the real owner could be a Greek (the horse is from Geelong Greek central) so could be propaganda.

What are you talking about the horse being from "Geelong Greek central"...?

As far as I'm aware there's no obvious 'greek' connection...

The horse is from New Zealand, his lineage is Zabeel (NZ) and Society Walk (NZ), the owners are 'Fairway Thoroughbreds Syndicate', managed by a Mr J Camilleri and trained by Peter G Moody the Queensland born trainer of 'Black Caviar' fame...

Racing syndicates are mostly made up of many people with small shares in the said horse, when a horse is purchased, the syndicate members put in proposals for the horses name, a name is settled on after it is submitted to the racing authorities and judged suitable and acceptable and of course that the chosen name isn't already in use.
