Macedonian wins race 3 of the Melbourne Cup

Macedonian just won race 3 after coming from the back of the pack with around 1000m to go. Any history on this horse or how the name came to be? I think there was a thread on this horse a while back.

I should've put some money on it. Anyone lucky enough to pick some winners yet?

Nah wouldn't really call myself a punter Prolet, not even old enough to bet...but in a few years I'll make some good cash from the TAB.

Horse racing doesn't really interest me, but I still watch the main race every year za spomen.

All bets are on Hold as there is a late protest.

Greeks (AMAC) protest on the grounds they have rights to the name "Macedonia" and the horse should be relegated to last"

Stay Tuned and don't rip up your tickets yet.

I'm not sure if there's any obvious Macedonian (or dare I say... 'greek') connections with this horse, I've been told neither the owners nor the lineage of the horse (through race names) has 'Macedonian' origins (?)

Thats the beauty of the name, it has such regal, powerful and historic connotations, quite fitting for a majestic beast like a race horse...its such a pity that some people can't see or respect this wonderful name but would rather treat it with such a disturbing lack of respect...

Makes me wonder when a Macedonian will race a horse called FYROM in the name of political correctness.

Haha, the way the Greeks act Bill such a thing is almost believable.

I also heard the horse can no longer participate in Melbourne Cup races unless it changes its name. Some of the new proposals include 'Geelong- Macedonian' or even 'Former Flemington race horse- Macedonian.'
Others say they are just pissed off they blew their entire retirement fund on the losing horse, which isn't much considering they like to retire at 50 years of age and drink 'greek coffee' all day.

Macedonian Too Tough In Long Black

Tuesday, 2 November 2010: The lethal combination of trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen were at it again when Macedonian proved too tough in today's Lavazza Long Black (2500m) at Flemington.

The honest stayer was patiently ridden by Nolen and settled near last but worked between runners around the bend and loomed to challenge.

He gradually picked up the tired horses and drew clear, holding off the challenge of Irazu on his outside.

The Robert Hickmott pair of Muir and the well backed I'm Imposing fought out third and fourth with the latter, the favourite, struggling in inferior ground near the fence and perhaps a sign of things to come in later races.

Moody described the lightly-raced Macedonian as a tradesman and will now head to Sandown for his next assignment.

“He's raced good and consistent,” Moody said.

“He's genuinely superior on top of the ground and is a dour stayer. He's very fit and he really sticks. What he lacks in ability he makes up for in stoutness and courage.”

Moody said Macedonian would now head to the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) on Saturday week.

Unfortunately for jockey Blake Shinn his mount Zauberin clipped heels and fell on the turn.

The mare got to her feet and is unharmed but Shinn was stretchered from the track and has been ruled out for the rest of the day.

Shinn was to have ridden Bart Cummings' Precedence in the Melbourne Cup with his replacement announced as James Winks.
The Macedonians originates it, the Bulgarians imitate it and the Greeks exploit it!

This horse won me $30.00. Noticed there was a horse called Macedonian a few weeks ago, saw the name appear in a few articles, after doing a search on 'Macedonian'.

Melbourne Cup next year, lets see this horse.

Wonder if Danny Nikolic had any intention to be the jockey of this horse, he was in the race as well.

I won the trifecta, but only put in a dollar which only pays 16% of the winings..
The payout for the trifecta was $267...
Spewing it wasn't in the thousands..

                        1. Americain, 2. Maluckday, 3. So you think

The Lion Will Roar, Did you put in a Box Trifecta?

Bagojche, I won $10 on the place

I tipped 2nd and 3rd, i wasnt expecting Americain to win it.

We also got an early christmas present from the reserve bank, having the rates go up by .25% and CBA lifted them to .45%

Risto, Who did you bet on?

I was at the Cup Yesterday. It was great to hear Macedonian get called out so many times by the race caller. 100,000 on ground and millions around the world got to hear the name Macedonian as well.

Macedonian was listed as an NZ horse.
From the village of P’pezhani, Tashko Popov, Dimitar Popov-Skenderov and Todor Trpenov were beaten and sentenced to 12 years prison. Pavle Mevchev and Atanas Popov from Vrbeni and Boreshnica joined them in early 1927, they were soon after transferred to Kozhani and executed. As they were leaving Lerin they were heard to shout "With our death, Macedonia will not be lost. Our blood will run, but other Macedonians will rise from it"
