Default Jovan Cvijic: Zones of Civilization of the Balkan Peninsula

I know that Cvijic typically claims the northern regions of R.Macedonia as being Serbian, and that maybe a turn off, but I think to this map maybe of interest:

What does he mean by "Old Balkan (modified byzantine) civilization" and the "Patriarchal regime"? I would've thought that nearly all of the Balkans were in some sort of 'Patriarchal regime'. I read through his analysis on this and he doesn't really specify what both mean, only that Old Balkan culture had something to do with women wearing jewelry on folk costumes.

And why does the 'Old Balkan' heavily align with that of the Jirecek Line?
