![]() I did say "etc." but you are correct about it being political. When I use "Eastern Europe" in reference to the scanning project I have in mind the whole Cold War "communist bloc" definition, which back in the day meant Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Albania (even though the last two later separated from the "bloc.")

Personally, I dislike the phrase Eastern Europe, as it implies some monolithic collective group. Ishmael, I may not be much help for your project, but I would like to pick your brain. Assuming you are a non-Greek, and non-Balkan person, what are your thoughts on the name dispute between Macedonia and Greece? What are your thoughts on the ethnic identity of Macedonians? Do you have a position? |

It seems pretty obvious to me that there exists a Macedonian nation and that it faced national oppression on the part of foreign occupiers. As for the name dispute, I think that those who claim an exclusive right to the region and its history are taking an unscientific position. There are people in both Greece and Macedonia who do this, but the Greek claim is probably more troubling because it is linked to efforts to deny the existence of the Macedonians as a people. I see no problem with a country located on Macedonian national territory calling itself Macedonia. |
