National Day of Macedonia


Today is the National Day of Macedonia.



Macedonia is a landlocked country on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Kosovo to the northwest, Greece to the south, and Bulgaria to the east. Skopje is the capital.

Since independence in 1991, Macedonia has experienced considerable economic growth, due to the development of an open economy with trade accounting for more than 90% of the Gross Domestic Product. The government has proven successful in its efforts to combat inflation, with an inflation rate of only 3% in 2006 and 2% in 2007, and has implemented policies focused on attracting foreign investment and promoting the development of small and medium enterprises. The government introduced a flat tax system with the intention of making the country more attractive to foreign investment.

Textiles represent the most significant sector for trade, accounting for more than half of total exports. Other important exports include iron, steel, wine, and vegetables.

The country is a member of the United Nations and the Council of Europe and a member of La Francophonie, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Since 2005, it has been a candidate for membership in the European Union and has applied for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership.

We congratulate the people and government of Macedonia led by Their Excellencies, President Gjorge Ivanov and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, on the occasion of its National Day. We wish them success in all their endeavors.

Just got back from Canberra, I missed the celebrations at Federation Square in Melbourne, but had a very eventful and positive day at Parliament House with a very organised delegation of the Macedonian community from all over Australia.

The game really is changing - as a community we've taken things to a whole new level.

Can you elaborate a little Rogi?

An Australia-Macedonia Relations Forum was held yesterday in Parliament House, Canberra.

The event came about by the organised and very close collaboration of the United Macedonian Diaspora (Australia), the Australian Macedonian Human Rights Committee, the newly established Macedonian National Council (with a representative from the state councils) and the Macedonian Consulate and Honorary Consulate.

The delegation of about 10 Macedonians from all over Australia, representing the peak Macedonian community organisations and a united Macedonian community held a working session over a few hours with various Australian politicians, members of the Australian Parliamentary Macedonian Friendship Group.

Following the forum, lunch was organised at the Members Dining Hall in Parliament House where some more informal, yet very productive discussions took place.

It was, in my opinion, a very positive step forward for our community. Much progress was made in the strengthening if relations between the Macedonian community and Australian politicians and their advisors from both Government and Opposition.

Further to that, it was a well coordinated event with a Macedonian community delegation of the highest calibre, from all over Australia. That in itself is a great leap forward for our community.

There are a number of other things which took place in this productive and eventful day, some of which I am not at liberty to discuss, which have lead me to declare the 8th of September, 2009 as the date at which begun the dawn of a new era for the Macedonian community in Australia and it's relevance and it's effectiveness.

A special thanks to our friend Prof. Peter Hill (ANU) who was the speaker for the forum and was very well received by all. Special thanks also to the offices of the Honourable Member for Corangamite, Mr. Darren Cheeseman, and the Honourable Member for Cowan, Mr. Luke Simpkins.
