I will make a controversial statement. I saw the lion as the most prominent Macedonian symbol in my youth. I have no problem with a red flag and a gold lion as a flag of our people. I like the old flag as well, but I would seriously have no problem with the lion!

Perhaps they should have opted for that instead of the new flag, then edit our coat of arms to incorporate the old symbol?

Hmm that's actually something ponder at, I wonder if the government has ever thought about this method as of circumventing the outcome when we changed our flag.

I suspect it was due to the VMRO connection of the lion. Which is a shame.

Indeed, the lion symbol pre-dates VMRO. Perhaps this can be looked at a little closer.
