Considering there was no clear consensus amongst the ancient authors on whether the Macedonians were of Greek stock, then one may suggest there is enough doubt and it was therefore quite likely the Macedonians were considered as foreign to the Hellenes.

In my opinion--I have expressed this before on this forum--is that this famous quote of Demosthenes must be understood in the context pertaining to the mythology of the Hellenic descent of the Macedonian kings starting with Alexander I who "proved" his Argive descent.

This mythological Hellenic lineage of the Macedonian kings floated in the ethers for some time. Demosthenes knew better. He knew that the Macedonian kings were not of Hellenic descent and frankly was brutally honest when he stated "not a Greek nor related to Greeks but a barbarian". If you think about this quote from a logical perspective:

Why would you call someone who is known to be a Greek "not a Greek nor related to Greeks"? It makes no sense.

However, it makes perfect sense to call someone whose Hellenic lineage was in doubt or mythological "not a Greek nor related to Greeks".

Of course. If they were Greeks he'd say something within the line of betrayal rather than make a mockery of himself by claiming someone who is Greek to not be.

It seems as though everything that supports our cause is 'purely hyperbolic'. Even when Emperor Michael told Kiril that "all Thessalonians speak pure Slavic" was turned to 'pure hyperbolic'

Here is a book called "Rise of the Macedonian Empire" written in 1887 by A.M. Curteis. He spends Chapter 1, Pg. 8 Describing the differences between Hellenes and Macedonians.
