Macedonian archeologists discover late antiquity fortress
A fortress dating back to late Antiquity was found near the villages of Ilovica and Stuka in the south*eastern Macedonian municipality of Bosilovo.
Viktor Lilcic, director of the Bureau for protection of cultural heritage said that their work led to the discovery of ancient defensive walls.
"It is a rare pleasure to announce the discovery of an unknown fortress in Macedonia. It's located east of Strumica, in a mountainous area. The team led by Vladimir Anastasov and myself discovered the fortress, and we were surprised by the size and the strength of the walls and the richness of the cultural finds. So far, we can say that the site dates to late Antiquity and we expect to find additional walls", Lilcic said.
The site is largely intact, with only one large hole made at a section of the wall, that was afterwards repaired. The existence of a strong fortified site in this area has not been listed in expert literature so far.
