Felt like this group deserved their own thread on this forum. For those that don't know, the Gemidžii were the anarchist group that committed the Solun Bombings of 1903. They are therefore also known as the 'Salonican Assassins' or the 'Boatmen of Salonica'.

Interesting bunch of lads, I think most of them were from Veles. Excuse my language, but thats what you would call Macedonian hard cunts.

Very brave and very patriotic. They could have chosen to behave like the modern Severni and chose to eat Ottoman scraps. But no, imagine they were around today.

Been interested in the Gemidzii, The Boatmen of Salonica after watching this clip.

The clip is from the banned TV Series ‘Macedonia’, with the song ‘Nalej nalej”. This series was banned in 2017 under the Zaev government but this clip made rounds on social media and Youtube.

"SONG FROM A BANNED TV SERIES FLOODS SOCIAL MEDIA
A message of defiance was shared throughout Monday as numerous commentators on the social media posted a recent version of “Nalej, Nalej” song, the haunting ballad about the Macedonian revolutionary movement.

The most recent version comes from the currently censored “Macedonia” series, which is meant to depict the tumultuous national liberation struggle of the Macedonians. Croatian Jadran Film was hired to produce the series, with popular writer Aleksandar Rusjakov preparing the script, but it was cancelled in 2017, when it was seen as politically inconvenient.

The song and its video, adapted from the still unfinished series, depicts the scene when the Gemidzii/Boatmen of Veles, a group of young revolutionaries, prepare to attack symbolic targets in Solun (Thessaloniki) in 1903, in the run-up to the VMRO led Ilinden Uprising. In the song, the Boatmen ask the lady at the inn they are gathered in to pour them another round of wine, while lamenting their soon-to-be trials and deportations through the dungeons of the Ottoman Empire.

The video also portrays one of the boatmen, Pavel Shatev, who took part in the bombing of the French ship Guadalquivir in the Solun harbor, and was imprisoned in Libya before returning to the Balkans after the Young Turk revolution. Shatev was a leading socialist organizer during World War Two and was elected the first Justice Minister of the newly formed Macedonian state in 1944, but because of his Macedonian patriotic positions he was accused of working with the Soviet Union against Yugoslavia and was imprisoned again in 1949, and was denied medical treatment until he died in 1951.

The song was also frequently performed in honor of another Macedonian dissident from Yugoslav times – actor Risto Siskov, who was who was tried in 1980 for speaking out against the Tito regime and died similarly after being denied treatment while in prison."

Not sure if it is true that Šatev wrote a complaint to the Bulgarian embassy in Belgrade in 1946, arguing that the new Macedonian language is Serbianised and the use of native Bulgarian language is prohibited in Macedonia? Apparently also participated on the side of the Bulgarian army in WW1.

Not sure if there is any truth to these allegations or just typical Bulgarian spin, been searching around. Not sure if anybody else has any sources or opinions?

Unless a document can be provided showing he wrote that to the Bulgarian Embassy, I would say it is untrue. The Yugoslavs probably conjured it up to justify imprisoning him.

Can't find anything from Zaev himself, but I would assume it was too controversial for him and harm our 'friendly relations with our neighbours.

"Tozija refuses to resign after being called out by Croatia, remains unapologetic for his insulting rants

The head of the Macedonian Film Agency Gorjan Tozija reversed the announcement that was made in media outlets yesterday and said that he is not resigning his position, despite the scandal he caused in relations with Croatia and Slovenia.

Tozija posted dozens of angry rants aimed mainly at Croatia, but also Slovenia and even Hungary. He declared Croatia a fascist country, accusing its Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and his HDZ party of being criminals and neo-Nazis. The socialist appointed official was apparently ticked off by the recent scandal in which the Macedonian Post Office issued a shocking stamp that portrayed a Greater Croatia, and the way this incident was received in the Croatian press.

Croatia Foreign Minister Gordan Radman yesterday spoke with the Macedonian Minister Nikola Dimitrov and demanded an apology from Tozija. Croatia reminded Macedonia of its unconditional support for our EU integration and asked whether Tozija, who is a Government appointee, speaks for the Government when he insults the country. It’s unclear whether Dimitrov sought to protect Tozija after this conversation. Shortly after, a pro-Government news site announced that Tozija will resign. But this morning, in an interview, Tozija came out unapologetic and claimed that all criticism of his comments comes only from “right wing news sites”.

Tozija, who has done a good share of business in Croatia, allegedly even as he was appointed to his position in Macedonia, also listed actor Rade Serbedzija to come to his aid. The two were most recently involved in the 2015 film The Liberation of Skopje that was richly supported by the Film Agency and Euroimage.

In his interview this morning Tozija insisted that his dispute with Croatia comes after he canceled the production of a historically themed TV series that was being filmed by Jadran Film. Tozija said that the portrayal of Macedonian history in the series could be seen as harmful to Macedonia’s relations with the neighbors, implying that he censored the series as part of the campaign of appeasement of neighboring countries and rewriting of Macedonian national history initiated after the SDSM party grabbed power in 2017."
