Condemned for a book about Macedonia and Macedonians
In 1924, Kosta Novakovich published a book titled “ Macedonia for the Macedonians! The country of farmers!”
“ … And Serbia, and Bulgaria and Greece served continuously as servants, to one or to another imperialist state. Macedonians realized that their liberation could come from themselves.”
“ Macedonians created their internal Macedonian organization in Salonika in 1893 year. They raised the parole:
Macedonia for the Macedonians! The land for the farmers! Autonomy of Macedonia!
The organization covered all nationalities: Macedonians, Serbs, Bulgarians, Greeks, Vlachs, Turks.”
This is the part of the book for which the author has been convicted and the book was banned.
He was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment.
Kosta Novakovich (1886-1939) was a Serb in the early 20th century. He was prominent member of the Serbian Social Democratic Party and one of the founders and leaders of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. He was also editor of the newspaper “ Labour” , “ Workers” and “ The Battle” .
In 1906 he joined the Serbian party “ Social Democratic Party” which acted as an opposition party in the Kingdom of Serbia, strongly opposing the plans for a “ Greater Serbia” i.e. the enlargement towards Macedonia and Albania. Along with Tuchovich, Lapchevich and Dragovich, he becomes one of the most prominent members and leaders in the party.
During the First Balkan War was a part of the Expeditionary forces that participated in the Serbian campaign in Albania. He leave a testament to the violent colonization of the Serbian state in Kosovo, which was conducted in areas with ethnic Albanian population.
On the founding congress of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1919 year, he was elected for a member of its direct governing. Novakovich was elected for a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and was a delegate at the Fourth and the Sixth Congress of the Communist International. In 1924 he was convicted by the Kingdom of SCS of 6 months imprisonment. He was arrested again and got five years imprisonment, but escapes from prison in 1927, he left the Kingdom and emigrated to Soviet Russia. In Moscow he worked as assistant for press, under the name of John Doe Dragachevac.
He was arrested on July 19, 1938 year, during the Stalinist purges. Shot on April 19, 1939 in Russia, along with other prominent leaders of the Communist Party ( Sima Markovich, Simo Minjush and Akif Sheremet), after Tito’ s decision to exclude them from the party.
Their bodies were cremated and their remains placed in a common tomb.
