LALOR North Primary School became a hive of activity, colour and song for Macedonia Independence Day celebrations.
More than 90 students in the Macedonian bilingual program embraced their cultural roots and provided a spectacular dance, drama and music performance for the broader Macedonian community that attended.
Macedonian bilingual program co-ordinator Mirjana Andovska said specialist programs such as art and music were taught in English, but students enrolled in the bilingual program learnt core subjects in English and Macedonian.
"Children learn exactly like others, the same curriculum, but in two languages," Ms Andovska said.
"It has been proven that children learn better with two languages and it helps with their cognitive development."
Parents have the choice of enrolling their children in the Macedonian bilingual program or the standard syllabus, which includes an Italian language program.
