This is the first time I communicate with Macedonians in such a constructive way, for which I thank each one of you - really. Thank you for not kicking my ass Fell free to ask me anything.

Razer, any anthropologist will tell you that more than a "few days" are required to develop some semblance of an understanding of a social context. Moreover, people do not usually 'open up' to complete strangers.
However, if you are in earnest, then I would recommend you contact OMO "Ilinden" Pirin, in advance. Here are their contact details:

Ok, after researching all day the Macedonians in Pirin question, I now understand the Bulgarian position. Here it is in a summary:
The Bulgarian position is that the Macedonian ethnic identity in Pirin was created by the Communist regime of Georgi Dimitrov and Tito, under the supervision of Stalin. It was a process, during which a Macedonian identity was forced to the people of that region so that Pirin province can eventually join the Socialist Republic of Macedonia and Yugoslavia. Thousands of people who didn't comply were thrown in jail and killed as a result. This process started in 1946 and ended in 1958, when the relationship between Yugoslavia and the USSR worsened. After the death of Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev cancelled the program, but elements of it still exist till today probably due to Serbian propaganda.
Here is a letter from Kiril Dramaliev, a popular Bulgarian politician at that time, to Georgi Dimitrov:
Here is a letter from parents in Petrich, written in 1948:
So this is why Bulgarians don't accept the Macedonian ethnic identity in Pirin.Last edited by Razer; 05-20-2012, 11:28 AM.

I'm finding in a lot of the discussions that people have in general the people are omitted Macedonian as if they don't exist.I would hazard to guess that prior to taking over the pirin area there must have been more than a million macedonians. The bulgarian govt has gone to a lot of trouble to deny that they exist.Despite what they did there are about 800,000 macedonians in pirin macedonia.Did anyone ask the people if they wanted to be taken over. Can one race of people walk in simply take over indigenous people's land killing looting raping, pillaging. how can that happen agains't the wishes of the people.
Razer that is precisely what has happened under the guise of liberating land from the ottomans bulgaria amongs't others simply took macedonian lands. But who were these people living allready there for thousands of years The macedonian people.
Macedonia should have been left to liberate itself from the ottomans not for landhungry wolves to satisfy their apetites. If you doubt it look at maps going back thousand years macedonia has allways been one country!!!"Ido not want an uprising of people that would leave me at the first failure, I want revolution with citizens able to bear all the temptations to a prolonged struggle, what, because of the fierce political conditions, will be our guide or cattle to the slaughterhouse"

Since I got back here, I haven't seen any anti-Macedonian feelings from the ordinary people. This is the truth, I promise you. Bulgarians are just trying to survive and don't really care about Macedonia. I have asked many of my friends "What do you think about the situation with Macedonia?" and the most common answer was something like "Leave them alone" or "I don't care". Now, the political parties here are a different story - I don't trust them and who knows what they are doing behind closed doors.
Regarding the 800,000 Macedonians in the Pirin region. I still find it hard to believe that such a large number of people is being oppressed. The best will be for me to visit this region and find out for myself.Last edited by Razer; 05-20-2012, 05:50 PM.
