At the height of the Greek Civil War in 1948, more than 38,000 children were abducted or evacuated by the Democratic Army (Greek Communist Party) or Queen Frederica of Greece in order to “save“ or “indoctrinate” them. Most of the children were relocated to “orphanages” in Eastern Europe, while national government placed the rest in “children’s homes” elsewhere in Greece. The authors have done extensive research and included a small sample of the extensive interviews of the “children” and their experiences. This controversial episode continues to fuel tensions between Greeks and Macedonians and within Greek society itself, and has a much longer and more complex history than this singular event.
