Speakers
Dr. Chritos Karatzios (McGill)
Christos Karatzios was born in Montreal but his family roots are from Kastoria, Macedonia, Greece. His paternal great grandfather was Bishop Karavangelis’s personal messenger and helped bury the body of the Greek hero Pavols Melas. His maternal great grandfather was the first priest to be ordained by Bishop Karavangelis in kastoria during the Macedonian Struggle. His mother is one of the 28,000 children who were taken over the Iron Curtain from Greece during the Greek Civil War.
The focus of Dr. Karatzios’s presentation is an analysis of Macedonism and the political/historical propaganda stemming from it. Is there any veracity to Macedonist claims or not? Using a visual journey from the beginning of the Bulgarian struggle in Macedonia to the modern FYROM, the audience will be able to understand Macedonist claims from the non-Greek point of view, and should be able to ascertain what is true and what is claimed for political gain in the Balkans. Finally, the audience will be able to understand what tools it can use to counter Macedonist propaganda.
