Music and Colors - St. Panteleimon Day in selo Patele, Lerinsko

For those of you who are like me and enjoy Macedonian folk music and dances from Aegean Macedonia, selo Patele hosted a colorful display for their patron saint-day last month. The band is a well known pro-Macedonian group from selo Neret. Also attending were many guests from neighboring towns.

What do people here think is the future for these kind of events in Aegean Macedonia? It is well known that there are many political implications involved. From one perspective, you can argue that these individuals are protecting their culture by performing centuries old Macedonian songs and folk costumes that are undeniably Macedonian and not Greek. From another perspective one can argue that these individuals are intimidated because they are forced to not sing the words and also they must have a Greek flag visible in the village if they want to continue to have events like these. Perhaps from a socio-cultural perspective things are good regarding our cause, from a national-political perspective the situation lies in favor of the Greeks.

          Excellent observation Niko.
If the situation can be described as being a win for the Greeks from a national-political perspective, then it is only because Macedonia does not offer an alternative appreciation in a more substantial way. In any way, it is hardly a win for Greeks .... they feel very uncomfortable when their own people sing in another language and obviously share cultural elements with "the enemy".

These events in Greek occupied Macedonia will not fade away very quickly but will take on a more distinct persona as time goes on. It will be Macedonian but not as we know it. This process has been going on for 80 years as the influences have their effects on our people. They are still Macedonians, but not like my grandparents. Nor are the Macedonians in Macedonia. Nor is anyone from 50 years ago.

          Thanks for the clips.

This is a step in the right direction, I will not argue with that. But notice that the performers are from R. Macedonia.

I have studied the political development of other European nations like Germany, and it turns out that it was largely a domestic-cultural renaissance (interest for local songs and traditions) that had paved the way for the rise of German political nationalism and desire for a unified German state. In many cases I could point out that the Macedonians in Greece are currently in the first "stage" towards nationalism. But it's what happens next that is very crucial.

This is why I so strongly believe that the future of Aegean Macedonians as a distinct cultural and ethnic group separate from the Greeks is entirely dependent on the future development of the Republic of Macedonia. Would these events be taking place today if Yugoslavia had not fallen apart? Probably not. Macedonian independence was a wake up call for most of us. Now that there is something good going on, R. Macedonia must not get distracted but it should embrace and help the situation for Aegean Macedonians, even in the most simplest ways, like promoting cultural exchanges.

                      Agreed.
They still sing the Greek stuff first ... get that out of the way ... the "officials" leave ... then the real Macedonian stuff starts happening.

I am thinking of going this year, want to catch up there in July?

Sorry I was thinking of the other clips that are circulating, you know the one with Ferus Mustafov and Blagica Pavlovska in Banica, they were the highlight of the whole event.
