    Greek tourism industry welcomes Macedonians

    Sorry for the heading.
But I was just having a daydream and imagined what Greece could do if it was a progressive country instead of being some clumsy backward 19th century mutation.

Imagine if Greece invites Macedonians to come back and share their culture. That the Ofcharani celebration of Sv. Ilia in July becomes a destination of sorts for Macedonians around the world. Where a cultural centre is developed and maintained to reflect the distinct Macedonian identity and the people can explore their history in the region.

Imagine Greek nationals celebrating one of their minority identities.

That my friends is how relations can become exquisite between the two countries!

Risto, that is a great dream but the reality is that Greece do not recognize any ethnic minority within there borders, so how could they possibly celebrate another minority?
It is a shame that Greece can not just accept that they have many different ethnic groups in their country, and live up to their claim as the inventors of democracy???

Have you got any spare drugs at all, I'm having trouble reading this thread without flying into uncontrollable rage and I was wondering if you could spare some of the drugs you are taking?
On Delchev's sarcophagus you can read the following inscription: "We swear the future generations to bury these sacred bones in the capital of Independent Macedonia. August 1923 Illinden"

Im not sure why they are Celebrating Sv Ilija now when its on 2nd of August, its always been that way.

Egejska Makedonija is full of tourists now from Stari Kraj, The Greeks will always be nice to us if we contribute to their tourism.

Prolet the Greeks claim to be orthodox but celebrate religious days not with the rest of the orthodox world.

But RTG is on to something and I don’t just mean the wacky tobacco (shhh RTG we wont tell anyone). If Greece could be convinced that by acknowledging their minorities it adds to the flavoured of the country and they could promote it as added variety a tourist could experience in Greece rather than seeing it as a loss to their Greek identity. it’s a long shot but not one to be dismissed if we at some point in time look like settling on RoM. I know you are probably thinking now what are you on OziMak but from reading the threads on the MTO I must say I am impressed with the extent and detail of the historical information and a good case could be made for most of the timeline of the past that we are Macedonians and are distinct from our Greek neighbours. Coupling this with our pro western and nato direction the west need not fear us and can save face while ensuring stability in the Balkans. When you have strength you can demand when you don’t you can persuade.

Until Greece recognises the Macedonians no one but Macedonians from geisha should go to Greece and only then to visit relatives or their properties. Any other Macedonians just going for a holiday are traitors. And you wonder why I feel conflicted about helping Macedonia.

It would be like re-living the pre 1913 days where Macedonians would celebrate minority greek culture.

Prolet - The Church of Greece adheres to the new ( Gregorian or Catholic ) calendar which is the calendar the West uses today. The feast of the Prophet Elijah falls on July 20. Since the MOC and many other orthodox churches still use the old calendar ( Julian ) we celebrate the feast 13 days later which puts it on July 20 ( Julian calendar ) or Aug 2 ( Gregorian ).

I can understand that, but i only thought the Gregorian Calender was used to determine Christmas and Easter? I didnt know it was used to mark our svetci too.

Prolet - the Greek church uses the Gregorian calendar for all days throughout the year including Christmas -the only exception is Easter when they adhere to the old calendar calculation. The Macedonian church and many other Orthodox churches still adhere to the old Julian calendar.

The calendar issue is one of the many hypocrisies of the Greek Church. They claim to be anti-ecumenical but then go ahead and change their calendar to match Rome and the west. In the early 1920's when the calendar change was unilateraly made anyone who resisted within the Greek church was persecuted.
