Olympic Air (OA), the revamped former national carrier following its acquisition by Marfin Investment Group (MIG), formally launched operation on Thursday (October 1), while Group chairman Andreas Vgenopoulos announced that MIG possesses an internationally registered trademark for the title "Macedonian Airlines".

The first official flight by Olympic Air, conducted by an Airbus 320, took off from Athens' 'Eleftherios Venizelos' International Airport (AIA) at 7:45 a.m. and arrived in Thessaloniki's Macedonia Airport at 8:15 a.m., symbolically retracing the route of the very first flight carried out more than half a century ago by Aristotle Onassis' Olympic Airways (OA).

The airbus, piloted by captain Sotiris Kalogirou, Olympic Air's flight operations director, carried Vgenooulos, the airline's senior executives and journalists on the new airline's maiden flight.

Before the flight departed, a traditional blessing took place, officiated by Metropolitan Nikolaos of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Vgenopoulos called the day "historic and moving", noting that it was a unique achievement in the sector of air transports that the new airline was set up, fully operational and flying in just a few short months, and expressed appreciation for the immense support of the public, 'which gives us the strength to push forward with our work".

Vgenopoulos also stressed, however, that: "We are not the owners of the name 'Olympic', but only its managers. The name belongs to the Greek people".

During a similar ceremony upon arrival at Thessaloniki's Macedonia Airport, Vgenopoulos announced that MIG possesses an internationally registered trademark for the title "Macedonian Airlines".

"We have received the codes, and no one else can fly with this name," he stressed.

Vgenopoulos explained that an Olympic Air subsidiary company, named Macedonian Airlines, will be set up, headquartered in Thessaloniki, for the purpose of soon serving the business and tourism needs of the region.

Next week, he added, he will have a meeting with officials and agencies of Northern Greece to discuss procedural issues, while the new subsidiary will be up and flying in a few months' time.

According to sources, the first flights to be carried out by Macedonian Airlines will be to Germany and Amsterdam.

The flight was greeted on arrival at Macedonia Airport by Macedonia-Thrace minister Stavros Kalafatis, Thessaloniki prefect Panayotis Psomiadis and other officials

Maybe they should have named it Micra Airlines .... just like the "Makedonia" airport in Solun was called until 1993.

In the name of the blood and the sun, the dagger and the gun, Christ protect this soldier, a lion and a Macedonian.

I know it is hard but the name is Thessaloniki, not Solun.
I thing that the one that Changed the name of his Country several times during the past 100 years is the Republic of Macedonia.
So compare too that, a simple change of the name of an airport is minor issue.
Another thing is that MIcra is the name of the area where the airport is located and the name was The Airport of Micra.

taxila, you must have the wrong forum.
I will give you a hint, this one is the RED one.
Solun is fine with us and many other nations. Some are even "Orthodox Brothers" with Greece.
Further, I hope you have enjoyed your stay ... you won't be here much longer I think.

The 16 ray sonce is everywhere ... all over Macedonia. Not just in Museums, try the churches and other historical places... you should visit the Republic of Macedonia and see it everywhere.

You are right, it was hard for everyone. Thessaloniki is a very newly revived name for the place. We like Solun. Other use Salonika. Others who have been brainwashed beyond normal human comprehension have apparently even reverted to 2000 year old names in some instances.

Hey, do you know where Istanbul is on a map?

Another day another moron. The story goes on.
It seems the Greeks don't understand that even if they call their privates Macedonia there are still tru Macedonain people out there who are carrying the name proudly.
As for taxila, shall we say good bye before we go into the old routine of fighting and wasting precious time.

The Republic of MAcedonia has always been Macedonia, has never changed it's name and for your information it never will. So learn how to live with that or get the hell out of here. It's very simple.

I personally can't care less about what you believe or don't, that is again your problem. I don't want to listen to your opinion because what you have shown us with your 'first few' posts is that you are not here to share opinion, you are here to annoy everyone coz you think you are a chosen one to fight the Greeko fight blah blah blah.
As for me, I do live in Macedonia half and half in the UK. I was born and raised in Macedonia and I probably spend more time there than you do in your almighty Greece.
