Macedonia on Eurobasket 2009

The EuroBasket 2009 will be the 36th EuroBasket, the biennial regional basketball championship contested by European nations and held by FIBA Europe. The tournament, which will be hosted by Poland, will begin on 7 September 2009 and will conclude with the final on 20 September 2009.

5 out of 26 attempts for threes, non existent defense just about sums up the Macedonian national team in the begining of this year's European Championship in basketball.

Greece showed why they are one of the best teams in Europe. Controlled the match from the very begining scoring most of their points in the paint.

Spanoulis, Zisis, Perperoglou moved with ease around Macedonia's defense all recording double digit points.

Massey was the only Macedonian with double figures, scoring 12 points. Vrbica Stefanov scored 3 points on 1 of 10 shooting.

Despite Macedonia's disappointment, this score was realistic, Greece is at the top of European basketball for more than a decade, while Macedonia made their second appearance to the Championship in more then a decade.

It was interesting in Skopje, where Macedonians sat together with Greek fans at a coffee shop near the Greek Consulate. Good atmosphere throughout the match, fans enjoyed 'Skopsko beer' with salad and roasted chicken.

Presently Macedonia will focus perhaps on its most important match, against Israel. It must win tomorrow in order to have any chance of qualifying for the next round.
