Young principled men (and women) who gave their all for the right to self determination. May they never be forgotten and may the modern leaders of Macedonia eternally writhe in shame for what they have done to a nation of great people.

On this day, 118 years ago, brave sons of Macedonia rose up against the Ottoman tyrants and their auxiliaries, to fight against oppression, centuries-old, and establish self-government in which power would rest in the hands of the Macedonian people. The Ilinden Uprising can be characterised in many ways. Optimistic. Idealistic. Misguided. Pyrrhic. It was, nevertheless, an expression of self-determination and undeniably Macedonian in nature, despite the external vices associated with some of its personalities.
Like many of our kinsmen, my great-grandfathers fought for the liberation of Macedonia. They were active in the Bitola theatre of war, surviving the subsequent suppression of the uprising and spending much of the following years hunting down traitors and fighting against foreign bands deployed by Serbia and Greece. Along with their leader, Ǵorǵi Sugarev, they finally met their end on 23 March, 1906, in a battle against a numerically superior Ottoman force. They were led into an ambush - betrayed by a fellow Macedonian.
The point of the story is simple. Macedonians need not look towards those encroaching from the outside, for the real enemy lies within. Remove the traitors from power and unite around a singular purpose in the service of the Macedonian cause, in every sphere, and see the enemies from outside looking in turn from hyenas to mice. It all starts with the restoration of integrity. Whilst this day may represent both pride and sadness, it is also a day of reflection, in which our ancestors who bled for a free Macedonia, in whichever era, should be paid homage in a manner befitting their courage and sacrifice. The current predicament may be sombre, but the struggle for Macedonia continues. Слобода или смрт.

Ilinden 2018 Event in Melbourne (NO VENTILATORI)
Went to a dinner dance on the weekend for Ilinden, was probably the best one i've ever been to.
Can happily say there were no VENTILATORI and heaps of young patriotic Macedonians.
If Zaev and Tsipras were there, the agreement would've definitely failed due to the amount of Macedonian sun flags being present.

There are three events in Macedonia's long history that are celebrated this day. The first is the battle of Chaeronea 358 BC against the Athenians. Philip 2 and his son Alexander the Great of Macedonia secured Macedonian sovereignty and ensured the safety of their people. The second is the Ilinden uprising were the Macedonian freedom fighters fought for a free and independent Macedonia from Ottoman Turkish rule. The third is the formation of Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) in 1944.
Ilinden holds a special place in the hearts of the Macedonian people. It is a very Holy day celebrating the life and teachings of St. Ilija, it is also a day that will forever be instilled in the memories of every single man, woman and child for generations to come. 2 August 1903 is a culmination of events that lead to the Macedonian revolution and many uprisings in Ottoman occupied Macedonia. It made ordinary teachers, farmers and fathers into Macedonian freedom fighters. Macedonian heroes like Goce Delcev, Pitu Guli, Jane Sandanski and Nikola Karev gave up their youth for the freedom of their people and their country Macedonia.
Up against great odds without the help of Europe and the great powers, with the constant propaganda that was filtered though from the newly created Bulgarian, Serbian and Greek kingdoms, the Macedonian people did not give up their fight for freedom. Woven into every flag of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation was the motto " Freedom or Death for Macedonia".
The Krushevo Republic was formed as the first republic on the Balkan peninsula, this is where the decisive battle was played out on the Mountain Meckin kamen or loosely translated to Bears rock, propagandists will argue that the Macedonians lost not able to withstand the large Turkish force which saw the end of the first republic in the Balkans and the Macedonian resistance. To the Macedonians this was not a loss, we had won. We had shown Europe and the world that we existed and that we were suffering and that we alone will take our freedom.
Illinden is not just one day celebrated on the 2 of August, for a Macedonian Ilinden is every single day until we see the dream of our Macedonian freedom fighters realised, to see a free and united Macedonia free from occupation forces of Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania.
As we remember the sacrifices that our ancestors made for Macedonia, we should keep the spirit of Ilinden alive in our hearts and our minds to carry the fight for a free and independent Macedonia.
Long live Macedonia
Long live the Macedonian People
