Third Half Time - Macedonian football film about WWII

Hollywood Film on Wartime 'Macedonia' Soccer Team

Skopje _ Branko Lustig, the famous Oscar-winning producer has joined ranks with Macedonian movie director Darko Mitrevski to shoot the film “The Third Halftime.”

“The Third Halftime” is the story of Ilejs Spic, the Jewish coach of the Skopje soccer team, “Macedonia” which during the Second World War, under his leadership became the champion of the fascist soccer league.

The movie will be produced by the Hollywood production company Kings Road Entertainment.

“This is a story about soccer that under the specific historical circumstances has become more than a game. It has become a battleground between good and evil,” Mitrevski told local media.

The director who also wrote the script promises spectacular historical soccer matches from the 1930 and 1940s but says the movie will also reveal how Macedonia lived under fascist occupation and the sufferings of Macedonia's Jews at the time.

Nearly all of Macedonia Jews perished in notorious Nazi death camps during the Second World War. Read more at http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/8438/

“One of my favourite scenes from the movie is when 10,000 spectators at the then Skopje stadium shout the name of the team “Macedonia”. A boy climbs on a tree who conveys the events to those who are outside the stadium and says 'they are shouting the name of our team.' 'That is not just the name of our team, that's the name of our country!' one man says to himself,” Mitrevski told local Dnevnik daily.

Lustig won two Academy awards, the first in 1993 for the production of Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler's List” and the second in 2001 for the epic movie “Gladiator” by Ridley Scott.

The movie will have cast with Hollywood actors but the director says there will be Macedonian actors involved too.

                        Finally......Some news.

'Third Halftime' filming kicks off on September 10
                        Tuesday, 30 August 2011

Filming of Darko Mitrevski's 'Third Half' kicks off on September 10 in Ohrid, the movie's director & scriptwriter said Wednesday at a press conference.

The seven-week process will also take place in Skopje and Bitola.

The film is based on a true story about the football team 'Macedonia' (FC Vardar predecessor), which under a leadership of Jewish coach, manages become a champion of "fascist soccer League" in 1942. The movie also depicts the life in Macedonia under fascist occupation and sufferings of Macedonia's Jews at the time.

The new film has been prepared for ten years, Mitreski said.

"I have been living with this story for ten years. Historic movies about football, Holocaust, WWII are not being made every day. This is an epic film and for it to be presented on the screen sets that don't exist anymore are required. We have been filming across Macedonia to find the most interesting locations, as we wish for the 'Third Halftime' to also be a postcard of our country's mystique, exoticism," said Mitrevski.

Sasko Kocev and Katerina Ivanovska (Macedonia's fashion model) are selected for the main roles of Kosta and Rebeka. The actors' crew also include Richard Sammel, Rade Serbedzija, Emil Ruben, Toni Mihajlovski ... and many others.

Macedonian Government declared the movie to be of national interest and granted EUR one million for its realization. Macedonia's Film Fund participated with EUR 500,000, while The Sparkasse Bank is the general sponsor. Macedonia's Jewish Community and its Holocaust Fund also made contributions.

                            Is that true?
It used to be called Macedonia and changed its name to FC Vardar???
The Greeks have changed everything TO Macedonia.
The Macedonians have been going the other way ever since Ilinden.
