65 years since publication of Macedonian Language Primer in Aegean Macedonia
    Wednesday, 23 December 2009

The Association of Macedonian-Greek Friendship and Cooperation and the "Krste Misirkov" Institute of Macedonian Language organised Wednesday a formal academy to mark 65 years since the Primer in Macedonian Language was published and a course for Macedonian teachers was opened in the region of Kostur, Aegean Macedonia.

Published in 1944 during the WWII, the primer was used in schools in the villages of Kostur and Lerin. Nineteen years earlier, the primer published by the Greek Ministry for Education was confiscated right after it was launched.

    - It was a triumph for the Macedonian people living in the Aegean part of Macedonia, because schools were opened in Lerin and Kostur villages despite the fact that the language was banned, said Fana Martinova-Buckova, PhD.

The primer was used for a year up until 1945. All 150 copies had vanished and not even one copy is preserved. Experts believe that a copy can be found in the archives of Greece.

The Macedonian language is not officially studied in schools in Greece and children are able to learn it from their parents or family members.
    1) Macedonians belong to the "older" Mediterranean substratum...
    2) Macedonians are not related with geographically close Greeks, who do not belong to the "older" Mediterranenan substratum...
