Greece started cooperating with Macedonia in anti-money laundering operation

For the first time ever, Greece honored today Macedonia's request for provision of information relating anti-money laundering efforts, after long-standing ignoring of the Macedonian competent authorities' requests for cooperation.

The Office for Money-Laundering/Countering the Financing of Terrorism (OMLCFT) said that today, 26 May, 2009, they received the first response to the request sent to their Greek Commission for Money-Laundering/Countering the Financing of Terrorism, for supply of information on individuals suspected of involvement in money laundering operations.

This problem was put on the agenda of the EGMONT Annual Assembly that is under way in Qatar's capital of Doha.

In an attempt to justify their lack of cooperation, the Greek Commission's representatives said they acted under direct instructions of the Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis to ignore any correspondence that mentions the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia.

According to OMLCFT's information, the Greek delegation came under additional pressure from the senior officials of EGMONT to improve the cooperation with the Republic of Macedonia in the field of anti-money laundering and combating terrorist financing.

Up until today, Macedonian OMLCFT has submitted about a dozen requests for supply of information, which received no response.
Perhaps Dora has something to hide.

Surely a name should not get in between something as important as international money laundering Dora. What a pitiful excuse.
